An al Qaeda-linked website has posted a 10-minute film showing civilians killed or maimed in U.S. and Israeli air strikes as an answer to an anti-Koran film released by Dutch lawmaker Geert Wilders last month.
The video, billed as a "response to the film called 'fitna' produced by the hateful crusader Wilders," is dedicated more to criticizing the U.S.-led "war on terror" than Wilders himself.

Muslim countries demand prosecution of Dutch anti-Qur'an filmmaker
GENEVA — Islamic countries used a meeting of the United Nations' top human rights body Tuesday to demand the prosecution of a Dutch politician whose anti-Qur'an movie has sparked Muslim protests.
Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia and other members of the UN Human Rights Council said the Netherlands should adopt laws against religious defamation.
"We recommend to the government of the Netherlands that it must ... initiate prosecution against the author" of the movie "Fitna," Pakistan's representative Masood Khan told the 47-member council.
The anti-Quran film by right-wing legislator Geert Wilders triggered street protests in Pakistan, Malaysia and Indonesia, and calls in other countries to boycott Dutch goods, when it was posted on a website last month.
In his film, Wilders couples verses from the Qur'an with images of the terrorist attacks on New York, Madrid and elsewhere, and shows footage of imams saying Islam should dominate the world.

Your tirades are a challenge to all moderate Muslims and those pushing for Islamic reform.
Wilders:
Moderate Islam? That's a contradiction. It's going to be a long time before we see a new Koran, an equivalent to the New Testament. Attacks don't happen in the name of Buddhism or Christianity; nor do homosexuals get beaten up, as happens daily in Amsterdam.

But immigrant youth crime has nothing to do with religion.
Wilders:
It's true, they don't carry the Koran under their arms. But it's at home. And their fathers go to the mosque. They don't tell their children that beating women or believers of other religions is not allowed. That's why we have to push harder for a kind of Leitkultur, a guiding culture. Not a monoculture but a culture that draws on our Christian, Jewish, humanistic traditions and that poses a challenge to the Islamic problem. This is patriotism, not nationalism, this is pride in our own culture.

Court: Wilders Allowed to Call Islam a Fascist Ideology
MP Geert Wilders does not incite to hatred or violence against Muslims. His comparison of Islam with Fascism is permissible, a district court in The Hague ruled yesterday.
The Netherlands Islamic Federation (NIF) had put forward a number of statements by the Party for Freedom (PVV) leader in a summary injunction. The NIF considered that Wilders had broken the law by comparing Islam with Fascism, calling the Koran the Islamic version of Hitler's Mein Kampf and the Prophet Mohammed a barbarian. All remarks are legal, the court decided yesterday.
The foundation demanded that Wilders take back his statements. But the court said: "A parliamentarian must be able to put forward his views." And "the right of freedom of speech is decisive here."
Wilders does not have to make a correction. This would according to the court be the same as a forced apology and therefore at odds with the principle of freedom of speech. "Regret cannot be forced with a verdict," according to the ruling.
According to the court, Fascism must be viewed more broadly than the NIF does. The federation of Turkish Muslims associates the term with "malignancies of Nazi Germany" such as the Holocaust. But the court said Fascism is a "collective term for ideologies with principles that embrace a totalitarian political system that leaves no room for dissenters."
NIF did not disprove that ideas are prevalent in Islam that are at odds with democratic principles. The group also did not succeed, according to the judge, in refuting Wilders' view of Mohammed being a barbarian.

The jihad against the Jews

The jihad has a problem with the Jews.
Not just a problem with Israel. Not just the occupation. Not just the policies of the Israeli government, the actions of the Israel Defense Forces, the support by Washington and the West for Israel's embargo against Hamas-ruled Gaza.
Islamists don't care who knows it anymore. They hate the Jews. And, not to put too fine a point on it, they want the Jews dead.
Some of it one has grown to expect. "Today there is no room for he who says that we should only fight the Jews in Palestine," Osama Bin Laden's second-in-command Ayman al-Zawahri said after Israel's incursion into Gaza last month. "Let us strike their interests everywhere, just like they gathered against us from everywhere."
Some of it is becoming better known. In a groundbreaking article in The New York Times this week, Steven Erlanger details, among other elements of Gaza life, the tides of Jew-hate washing over the Strip with the Hamas seal of approval.
There is imam and legislator Sheik Yunus al-Astal, who, citing a Koranic verse indicating that "suffering by fire is the Jews' destiny in this world and the next," concludes that "we are sure that the holocaust is still to come upon the Jews."
There is imam and legislator Marwan M. Abu Ras, chairman of the Palestinian Scholars League and a religious authority who anchors Hamas policies in Koranic sanction, branding Jews "the brothers of apes and pigs."
This dovetails nicely with programming decisions taken by Hezbollah's Al Manar Television, which broadcast a Syrian-produced mini-series that showed a Jew killing a Christian child to obtain blood for baking Passover matza.
And then there is the case of the much anticipated, widely feared new film by Dutch lawmaker Geert Wilders, "Fitna." Officials across Europe and throughout the Muslim world have braced for the possibility of violent protests, demonstrations on the model of those sparked by Danish cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed, which protesters saw as a grave insult to Islam.
But the initial reaction has been muted, despite, or because of, an emphasis on footage such as Islamic clerics voicing virulent attacks against Jews, urging that Jews be killed and even beheaded, clips of a little girl quoting Allah in the Koran terming Jews "apes and swines," and of demonstrators promising "another Holocaust" and praising Adolf Hitler.
It is worth noting that, in an initial response to the release of the film on the Internet at the end of last week, the attorney representing the umbrella group for Dutch Muslims said that at first glance, "Fitna" does not constitute an insult to their religion.
One has to wonder, why not? Are calls to kill Jews as Jews not considered an insult?

A statement on the Liveleak site said it had upgraded security for staffers and their families.

Dutch Establishment Threatens to Prosecute Wilders and Claim Damages

Geert Wilders, the Dutch politician who is making a 10-minute movie about Islam entitled Fitna (Arabic for “ordeal”), has felt compelled to cancel the March 28 press conference where he intended to show his film. The Nieuwspoort press center in The Hague, which is run by a board of journalists, publishers and government press officers, demanded that Wilders pay 400,000 euros for extra safety measures. “Apparently, you have to be a millionaire to organize such an event,” Mr Wilders said. “Even if I had the money I am not going to spend it on a press conference.”
No Dutch broadcaster, public or private, has been willing to show the film. There are indications that Fitna will also be banned on Youtube, which removed a clip featuring Mr Wilders two week ago, on so-called “ethical grounds”.
Dutch international companies, fearing a boycott of their products by Muslims, have announced that they intend to hold Mr Wilders responsible for a loss of profits and markets in the event of a boycott. They have asked Gerard Spong, one of the top lawyers in the Netherlands, to see whether a court case claiming damages from Wilders will be possible. Mr Spong and several other lawyers have already lodged some fifty formal complaints against the politician for “incitement to racial hatred and discrimination of Muslims” because Mr Wilders expressed the opinion that the Koran is “a fascist book which should be banned in the Netherlands.”
Last November, when Wilders announced he was going to make a movie expressing his view on Islam and the Koran, Doekle Terpstra, a member of the board of directors of the Anglo-Dutch multinational Unilever, told the Dutch media that “Geert Wilders is evil, and evil has to be stopped.” The Unilever director, anticipating a worldwide Muslim boycott of Unilever products (brands such as Axe, Ben and Jerry’s, Best Foods, Brooke Bond, Colman’s, Cif, Dove, Glidat Strauss, Heartbrand, Hellmann’s, Imperial Margarine, Knorr, Lipton, Pepsodent, Sunsilk, Unox, Vaseline, etc.), called upon the Dutch to “rise in order to stop Wilders from preaching his evil message.”
Mr Wilders, a member of the Dutch parliament, has been living under police protection for almost four years. Muslim fanatics have threatened to assassinate him for his outspoken criticism of Islam. The politician has no fixed residence and has to live in army barracks or other heavily secured premises.

30 Muslim Ambassadors Meet Dutch PM Over Anti-Islam Film
THE HAGUE (AFP)--The Dutch foreign minister met ambassadors from 30 Muslim countries Wednesday to discuss the imminent broadcast of an anti-Islam film made by a far-right Dutch parliamentarian, his office said.
The talks, held at the request of the 50-strong Organization for the Islamic Conference, came as several Muslim countries threatened an economic boycott of the Netherlands if the film is shown.
"There was a meeting this morning, requested by the OIC, to hear the Dutch government's point of view on Geert Wilders' film," a spokesman for Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen said.
Thirty ambassadors, based either in the Netherlands or in neighboring Belgium, attended the meeting.
The Dutch government has twice tried and failed to convince Wilders - the leader of the far-right Freedom Party - not to broadcast his film, fearing a repeat of the worldwide protests which met the publication of satirical Danish cartoons of the prophet Mohammed.
The Taliban in Afghanistan already have threatened retaliation against the 1, 660 Dutch soldiers in the country if the film is broadcast.
Verhagen pointed out that the "the government is fundamentally in disagreement with Wilders" and that "in the internal Dutch debate, both freedom of expression and religious liberty have their place."
Wilders, announcing his film project last autumn, said he was going to expose the Koran's "fascist" nature, which he compared to Hitler's "Mein Kampf".

Wilders film not shown to anti-terror body
Anti-Islam MP Geert Wilders is refusing to allow the Dutch anti-terrorism coordinator to see his controversial anti-Koran film in advance, reports Tuesday’s Telegraaf.
Tjibbe Joustra, who is responsible for Wilders’ security, wants to see the film so that he can decide what steps he needs to take to protect the leader of the anti-immigration party, the paper says. But Wilders does not agree with the conditions under which he wants to see the film, according to the Telegraaf.

Meanwhile Tuesday’s Volkskrant reports that Wilders is consciously refusing to debate his anti-Islamic views with Muslims and has regularly rejected invitations from a variety of organisations to participate in discussions both on TV and elsewhere.
One of the groups that have invited Wilders to debate is what the paper calls the ‘connecting generation’ of eight young Dutch-Moroccan professionals who want to break the ‘negative spiral’ of the current debate on Islam in the Netherlands.
Others include the multicultural students’ organisation SUN whose secretary Harun Yildirim tells the Volkskrant that Wilders just ‘says things in the media and then just turns off his phone so that he gets away with it time after time’.
And Jihad Alariachi, one of the presenters of the tv discussion programme Meiden van Halal (Halal Girls) tells the paper: ‘I understand that he [Wilders] is scared that voters will walk away if we confront him with arguments, but for someone who has no problem with labelling others as cowards, it’s cowardly.’
In reply to the Volkskrant’s question as to why he would not debate issues with Muslims, Wilders sent a text message to the paper saying that he would not do so until after his film is screened.
One can only hope that Wilders is well versed on the qur'an & islam overall because both Dutch dhimmis & their moslem overlords will try to shred Wilders to pieces and show that he is only against islam because he is ignorant of its 'peaceful' aspects...

Cabinet looked at legal ban on Wilders film
The government has taken legal advice about banning Geert Wilders' short anti-Koran film, the Telegraaf reports on Monday, quoting sources close to the cabinet.
The paper says that the government's legal officials told ministers that going to court ‘need not be entirely hopeless’ because of the danger to national security and public order the film could provoke.
Although the cabinet rejected the idea of trying to ban the film during Friday’s ministerial meeting, the idea has not yet been thrown out, sources told the paper.
However, the cabinet is divided on the issue and Labour ministers in particular are totally opposed to a ban, the paper says.

While stopping short of asking Wilders not to release the film, Balkenende said he was seriously worried about the effect it could have on Dutch citizens, soldiers and companies.
'It is our duty to point this out to Mr Wilders. That is why we are publicly speaking out,' Balkenende said after the weekly cabinet meeting.
'We have a duty to make clear to everyone that the methods and thoughts of one MP do not correspond to those of the government.'
Are these the same individuals that have the temerity to show up on Dutch television to announce that ISLAM IS THE RELIGION OF PEACE?!?
Perhaps this will put a period to that hypocrisy, at least by the Dutch, I don't see any way that moslems will see it...
And what will the implications be of the limiting of the 'FREEDOM OF SPEECH'?!?
Will the authorities in all of the dhimmi states of Europe then go on to curtail FREE SPEECH for all of their citizens?!? Ohhh I should clarify that, curtail FREE SPEECH only for the dhimmis, because their moslem overlords will be able to spout off about their jihad all they want...
In other words, limiting FREEDOM OF SPEECH for Geert Wilders will be just short of a 'death blow' to Western civilization...

While stopping short of asking Wilders not to release the film, Balkenende said he was seriously worried about the effect it could have on Dutch citizens, soldiers and companies.
'It is our duty to point this out to Mr Wilders. That is why we are publicly speaking out,' Balkenende said after the weekly cabinet meeting.
'We have a duty to make clear to everyone that the methods and thoughts of one MP do not correspond to those of the government.'
Are these the same individuals that have the temerity to show up on Dutch television to announce that ISLAM IS THE RELIGION OF PEACE?!?
Perhaps this will put a period to that hypocrisy, at least by the Dutch, I don't see any way that moslems will see it...
And what will the implications be of the limiting of the 'FREEDOM OF SPEECH'?!?
Will the authorities in all of the dhimmi states of Europe then go on to curtail FREE SPEECH for all of their citizens?!? Ohhh I should clarify that, curtail FREE SPEECH only for the dhimmis, because their moslem overlords will be able to spout off about their jihad all they want...

Labour (PvdA) however considered the CDA-Verhagen position was too explicit. In fact, all parties in the Lower House criticised the foreign minister. And so the cabinet, in which CDA and PvdA are the dominant factors, produced a statement on Friday trying to address both Wilders and Islamic countries.
"We condemn all threats, including those directed against Mr. Wilders. And we call on the governments (of Islamic countries) to abide to the principles of international law, such as the duty therein laid down to protect foreign interests, citizens and companies. At the same time, we have the duty to make it clear to all, that the conduct and thoughts of an individual MP do not match those of the government. We defend the core values of freedom and respect. We guarantee freedom of speech and freedom of religion," the CDA premier stated.
Less balanced than the declaration was the premier's response to questions from journalists after he had finished the statement.

"Ask yourself what your responsibility is at this moment," he said about Wilders. "And at this moment, a great responsibility is resting on Mr. Wilders," he added.
The premier summed up examples of "critical signals" he received. "At a festival, a Dutch product was refused; the Taliban announced action towards Dutch soldiers; and stewardesses are afraid to fly to certain destinations. These are only the examples of one day. This is the reality we are in. (...) Mr. Wilders cannot ignore the sentiments that are already being expressed." (...) Economic sanctions, attacks, threats, great consequences. The one carrying the responsibility for that, is the one who is currently providing grounds for that."
Wilders condemned the statement. "Although the cabinet is giving into and capitulating to Islam, I will never'', he stressed. "My film will be released no matter what". Nobody yet knows what it will show.

The foreign ministers of Syria, Egypt and Morocco spoke against the film with Dutch State Secretary for Social Affairs and Employment Ahmed Aboutaleb, a Muslim himself, at the ministerial meeting that ended Tuesday.
Dutch far right leader Geert Wilders is behind the 15-minute film 'Fitna', which according to reports denounces the Koran as a fascist book and claims it incites people to murder.
Dutch political leaders are concerned about another flare-up of a cross-cultural conflict, similar to the one that erupted in early 2006 after the Danish publication of cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammed.
Aboutaleb, who was stepping in for his country's foreign affairs minister at the conference, told Malta's main newspaper, The Times of Malta, he had broached the matter.
he said: 'My role in this discussion here is to explain to our Arab friends that we have a constitution in which freedom of speech is guaranteed...which means that there is no need, especially, so far, for the government to intervene.'
He stressed that, even though the government was currently unwilling to intervene, the case could still be taken before the courts on the grounds of racial hatred or discrimination.
Aboutaleb insisted that he expected the Muslim communities not to retaliate violently but to fight back using the same weapon of freedom of expression. The U.S. military article was authored by a member of the public affairs team for Coalition Joint Task Force-82, which commands the U.S. troops in the country as part of NATO's International Security Assistance Force.
It was posted on Jan. 21 and taken down on Jan. 30, the author, Master Sgt. Allen Ness, told United Press International. A copy was kept by journalist and blogger Bill Roggio, who shared it with UPI.
"It was being viewed not as a criticism of his position on Islam, but as criticism of his right to free speech," Ness said. "I never had any disagreement with his right to free speech. … What I disagreed with was his blanket condemnation of Islam."
He said he was motivated to write it by his concerns about "what could happen when the fundamentalist supporters of terror get hold of his film" if it was deeply insulting to Islam like the Mohammed cartoons.
"Our most important allies here are the Afghans: the police, the military, the population as a whole -- they are all Muslims," said Ness, pointing out that the country was called the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.
He said the riots in Afghanistan over the Mohammed cartoons -- which Wilders' party republished on its Web site -- had "caused great damage and loss of life," but just as importantly had "damaged the trust that we had built up with the Afghans."
The incident shows the difficulties that the U.S. military sometimes has in calibrating the weaponry it uses on the battlefield of ideas, said Roggio, a writer specializing in counter-insurgency who has spent time embedded with U.S. and Afghan forces.
"I understand where they were coming from" with the article, he told UPI. If rioting broke out, Afghan security forces would have to take to the streets to confront angry mobs who would often be attacking Western symbols.
"The military fights alongside these guys. The way they see it is they are fighting extremists … trying to hijack a religion," and provocations like Wilders' film were not helpful.
"It is damaging to the legitimacy" of Afghan security forces if they are "seen as protecting those who have insulted the religion."
Roggio said the article was "well-intentioned but not fully thought through" and was "open to misinterpretation."
John Brennan, the former head of the U.S. government's National Counter-Terrorism Center, said the issue was particularly difficult because the article had appeared on a U.S. military official Web site.
"People will see it as the position of the U.S. government if it is there," he said. "It is different from a private commentary."
"I am not one of those who comb the Web looking for politically correct outrages," said Roggio, "but it read to me like a criticism of his right to free speech."
"He does have the right to free speech," he continued, referring to Wilders, "and I have the right to think he is stupid and irresponsible."

Film on Islam Making Waves, Even Though No One's Seen It Yet

A Dutch lawmaker who caused a stir last year with calls to ban the Koran in his country is again under fire, this time for making a film criticizing Islam's most revered text.
Geert Wilders announced late last year that his aim in making the short movie was to show that the Koran was not some "old dusty book" but the inspiration in many parts of the world for "intolerance, murder and terror."
He said at the time that it would appear in late January; however, the release has been delayed by several weeks.
Although the film has yet to be seen, some media, both in Islamic nations and the Netherlands, already are predicting a Muslim reaction like the one that greeted the publication by a Danish newspaper in 2005 of cartoons depicting the Muslim prophet, Mohammed.
"The controversial film is expected to spark worldwide protests similar to those staged after the publishing of a series of blasphemous cartoons by a Danish daily," said Iran's Press TV.
Reaction to the cartoons included a boycott of Danish products and violence in several Islamic countries, some of it deadly.
The Iranian television network said the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), a Saudi-headquartered bloc of 57 Muslim-majority states, would be discussing the film and may seek a meeting with senior Dutch government officials.
Pakistani foreign office officials were also quoted as saying that the movie would be taken up by the OIC. Pakistan currently chairs the OIC's grouping of foreign ministers.
Since the Mohammed cartoon episode, the OIC has been pushing at the U.N. for an international ban on acts that "defame" Islam. Last December, it succeeded in getting a General Assembly resolution passed on combating the "defamation of religions."
The OIC executive committee held a meeting in Jeddah on Sunday, but it focused on the situation in the Gaza Strip and a final communique released afterwards made no reference to the Dutch movie.
Iran's ambassador to the Netherlands, Bozorgmehr Ziaran, told the country's Volkskrant newspaper that Wilders' film could endanger the safety of Dutch military personnel serving in the NATO force in Afghanistan. The troops, he said, would be seen as "representatives of people who besmirch the Koran."
Ziaran also said he could not guarantee that Iranians would react calmly to the movie.
Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende said on Dutch television last month that the film posed a "crisis" for the government, and Dutch media have aired leaked reports about contingency plans being drawn up by government agencies in case of security threats.
European Union justice ministers meeting recently in Slovenia expressed concern about the situation.
Madrid-based legal scholar Juan F. Carmona y Choussat said the episode raised questions that would have to be answered by Europeans and Westerners.
"Is censorship regaining its grounds in the heart of Europe?" he asked in an article written for the Strategic Studies Group think tank. "How far will Europeans go to defend freedom of expression? What are the limits of this freedom where Islam is concerned?"
What does seem clear, Carmona said, is that "once you give up a bit preventively, chances are you will only be hated more."

THE HAGUE, 01/02/08 - Iranian Ambassador Ziaran intends to invite all Islamic ambassadors in the Netherlands for a meeting on Party for Freedom (PVV) leader Geert Wilders' film on the Koran.
Ziaran met this week with the LBM, a new umbrella of Moroccan organisations in the Netherlands. On NOS Journaal, the daily TV news of public broadcaster NOS, he said he would organise a meeting with the ambassadors of Islamic countries shortly on the already-controversial film that Wilders has said he plans to air in March.
LBM, chaired by former leftwing Greens (GroenLinks) MP Mohammed Rabbae called on Ziaran to issue a message to the Iranian people not to react violently to the film, in which Wilders wants to portray the Koran as a fascist book. Ziaran could not guarantee that the streets of Tehran would remain calm.

A politician has warned that a "fear of Islam" is governing Holland after he delayed the release of a short film attacking the Koran.
Geert Wilders, 44, the leader of the Dutch Freedom Party, who compares the Muslim holy book to Adolf Hitler's Mein Kampf, sparked government panic after saying the anti-Islam film would be released tomorrow.
As Dutch police prepared for a weekend of riots and Mr Wilders was told by the authorities that he would have to leave country, he launched a new attack on "intolerant" Islam while announcing that his 10-minute film attacking the Muslim faith would be postponed for two weeks.
"If I had announced that I was going to make a film about the fascist character of the Bible would there have been a crisis meeting of Holland's security forces?" he wrote to the Volkskrant newspaper.
"Would I have received as many death threats as I have done since announcing I was making a film about the Koran? Of course not."

"Send a signal ... to Islamists that the Koran can never, ever be used in our country as an excuse or inspiration for violence."
Hitler's Mein Kampf, published in 1925, outlines the future Nazi dictator's racist ideology. It has been banned from sale in the Netherlands since the end of World War Two.
Ayhan Tonca, chairman of the CMO umbrella group of Dutch Muslim organisations said Wilders' comments were best ignored.
"This is typical Wilders. This is a ridiculous idea," he said "There is not much news at the moment so he is trying to create some."
Wilders, whose new party won nine seats out of the 150 in parliament in last November's elections, is well known for his firebrand remarks on Islam.
He has warned of a "tsunami of Islamisation" in a country home to 1 million Muslims, and has lived under heavy protection since receiving death threats from Islamist militants in 2004.
Wilders said an attack over the weekend by two Moroccans and a Somali on a young Iranian-born politician who heads a Dutch group for "ex-Muslims" had spurred him to write.
The attack on Ehsan Jami, 22, caused an outcry in the Netherlands, where the November 2004 murder of Theo Van Gogh, a filmmaker critical of Islam, by a Dutch-Moroccan Muslim militant led to an anti-Muslim backlash and exposed social tensions.
Issues of immigration and integration no longer top the political agenda, despite the efforts of Wilders and his allies.
"Allah sees the death penalty as fitting for those who no longer believe," Wilders wrote, adding this view had fuelled the attack on Jami, now under police protection.
The Muslim holy book should be banned from sale, from use in mosques and private households, Wilders added.
Earlier this year, Wilders called for a vote of no-confidence in two Muslim government ministers, questioning their loyalty to the country because of their dual nationality.
He has also campaigned to ban Muslim face veils, ban the building of new mosques and halt all Muslim immigration.
In April, Wilders was warned by the Dutch anti-terrorism chief that his anti-Islam statements had stoked anger in the Middle East, and that he was going too far.

Dutch right-wing anti-Islam lawmaker calls for law that targets only few dozen women in Holland.
THE HAGUE - A Dutch right-wing anti-Islam politician on Thursday submitted new proposals for a law banning burqas after an earlier attempt stranded.
In letter to parliament Geert Wilders, who heads the Freedom Party which has nine of the 150 seats in the lower house, wrote that "the burqa and the niqab is a symbol of the oppression of women" and is "in defiance of the democratic constitutional state".
The burqa is a veil covering the entire face and body and a mesh screen to see through, while the niqab is a veil covering the face but leaving the eye area clear. It is not known how many women in the Netherlands wear the face veils but estimates are a few dozen.
Nearly two years ago, in October 2005 a majority of the Dutch parliament voted in favour of a motion by Wilders to ban burqas in public places.
However, the then minister of integration, hardliner Rita Verdonk, never crafted a law for a burqa ban after an advisory committee said such a ban could be unconstitutional because it violated the right to equal treatment for all residents of the country.
Now Wilders, known for his harsh anti-Islam rhetoric, has submitted his own law proposal and hopes the parliament will agree. It is unlikely that he will get another majority as the elections of November 2006 put an end to a centre-right majority in parliament that backed the plans.
Wilders wants to ban specifically burqas and niqabs in public places including stations, stadiums, shops, restaurants, museums, hospitals, cars driving on the public roads and public transports. He proposes a maximum sentence of 12 days in jail or a fine of 3,350 euros (4,619 dollars).
If the law is passed it would be a world first. No national government has yet banned the use of face veils in public places.

Anti-Terrorism Authority Denies It Intimidated Wilders
THE HAGUE, 28/04/07 - The Anti-terrorism National Coordinator (NCTb) denies that it tried to pressurise Party for Freedom (PVV) leader Geert Wilders to adopt a milder tone about Islam. The Lower House is unconvinced and wants clarification by Justice Minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin.
Wilders said on TV programme RTL Nieuws Thursday evening he had a three-hour meeting at the NCTb office two weeks ago. NCTb chief Tjibbe Joustra showed him "hundreds" of newspaper articles and TV pictures from the Arabic world with angry reactions to statements made by Wilders in February about the Koran and the Prophet Mohammed. The message was that the Netherlands could as a result of the PVV land up in a situation like that of Denmark after a Danish newspaper printed cartoons about Mohammed, Wilders averred.
Wilders stated that he did not at first feel intimidated by NCTb. "But when I requested the material after the interview, I was only sent untranslated documents in Persian and Arabic. Then I began to think that there was perhaps a double agenda."
In February, Wilders said Muslims in the Netherlands should tear up half the Koran because the content was unacceptable. He also stated that Mohammed, if he lived in the Netherlands today, would have to be tarred and feathered and deported from the country as an extremist.
The House wants clarification from the government on the behaviour of the NCTb. It may have tried to gag a public representative, say several parties. Wilders himself did not wish to draw this conclusion, but "I do feel a bit intimidated." A NCTb spokesman would only say "we reject any relationship that is laid with intimidation."
Wilders commented that in the interview, Joustra immediately corrected a NCTb staff member who suggested that Wilders would be better to moderate his tone. Nonetheless, the message came over that Dutch people in the Middle East could be endangered by Wilders' statements, as could exports of Dutch companies, according to the MP.

NETHERLANDS: MP DENIES CONFLICT OF INTEREST IN MOROCCAN ROYAL CONSULTANCY JOB
Amsterdam, 2 March (AKI) - New Labour MP Khadiya Arib, who has an additional position on a Moroccan royal commission charged with preserving and strengthening the Moroccan identity of Moroccans living abroad, on Friday told Radio Netherlands the role does not constitute a conflict of interest. The country's first Muslim ministers, Labour party members Nebahat Albayrak and Ahmed Aboutaleb on Thursday survived a no-confidence vote in the parliament tabled by the far-right anti-immigrant PPV party chief Geert Wilders.
Wilders had argued Albayrak and Aboutaleb, who hold joint Dutch-Turkish and Dutch-Moroccan and nationality, respectively, should resign as their double passports meant divided loyalties. His reasoning was rejected by MPs.
But during the debate, right-wing liberal party VVD leader Mark Rutte argued for "concrete legislation" to end dual nationality for all Dutch citizens. And prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende refused to rule out changes in the law that would prevent ministers holding two nationalities in the future.
