NETHERLANDS: MP DENIES CONFLICT OF INTEREST IN MOROCCAN ROYAL CONSULTANCY JOB

Amsterdam, 2 March (AKI) - New Labour MP Khadiya Arib, who has an additional position on a Moroccan royal commission charged with preserving and strengthening the Moroccan identity of Moroccans living abroad, on Friday told Radio Netherlands the role does not constitute a conflict of interest. Wilders had argued Albayrak and Aboutaleb, who hold joint Dutch-Turkish and Dutch-Moroccan and nationality, respectively, should resign as their double passports meant divided loyalties. His reasoning was rejected by MPs.

But during the debate, right-wing liberal party VVD leader Mark Rutte argued for "concrete legislation" to end dual nationality for all Dutch citizens. And prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende refused to rule out changes in the law that would prevent ministers holding two nationalities in the future.
