Venezuela to sell gasoline to Iran
TEHRAN, Iran—Venezuela has agreed to sell gasoline to Iran, the South American county's energy minister said in comments published Tuesday, a week after the Islamic country imposed a fuel rationing program that has sparked violence.
"Yes, Iranians have asked to buy gasoline from us and we have accepted this demand," Rafael Ramirez told the Iranian daily newspaper Shargh. The reformist daily said Ramirez declined to elaborate on the deal.
During a visit to Iran this week, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez called the two nations "strategic partners." Ramirez accompanied Chavez on the visit.
Last week, the Iranian government began rationing fuel, causing angry Iranians to smash shop windows and set fire to dozens of gas stations in the capital Tehran and several other cities.
The government says the fuel rationing will free up funding for development projects and make the country "invincible."
Iran is one of the world's biggest oil producers, but it doesn't have enough refineries, so it must import more than 50 percent of the gasoline its people use.
The rationing is part of a government attempt to reduce about $10 billion it spends each year to import fuel that is then sold to Iranian drivers at far less than its cost, to keep prices low.

Chavez says Venezuela might go nuclear
MOSCOW, June 29 (UPI) -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has suggested that his country might one day go nuclear, and defended Iran's right to pursue nuclear energy.
Noting that neighboring Brazil has declared its nuclear energy intentions, Chavez said Venezuela "might do likewise," Globovision TV reported Thursday.
Chavez's remarks in Moscow came ahead of President George W. Bush's scheduled visit to the Russian capital.
The remarks also came as the Venezuelan leader discussed a deal for the purchase of five Russian submarines, valued at more than $1 billion.
The leftist leader in recent years has sought to improve Venezuela's defenses, claiming the United States is intent on invading the South American country to take over its oil supply -- allegations Washington has denied.

Chavez opposes Ahmadinejad on Israel
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who maintains warm ties with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahamadinejad, said Friday in a television interview that he opposed Ahmadinejad's call to "wipe Israel off the map."
"I don't agree with [Ahmadinejad's] statements…I don't support causing harm to any nation," Chavez declared. Chavez has repeatedly raised the ire of Jewish groups by making remarks deemed anti-Semitic.
In addition, Chavez has come out in support of Iran's nuclear program as well as denouncing the summer's war in Lebanon, accusing Israel of a 'new Holocaust.' At the Non-Aligned Movement summit, which was held in Cuba leading up to Ahamdinejad's visit to Caracas in September, Venezuela and Iran channeled the tide of global anti-US sentiment into support for Iran's right to nuclear energy.
