Quarter of Rotterdam Turks Marry Relatives
Almost one quarter of Turkish and Moroccan parents in Rotterdam are married to a relative. The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) writes this in a study commissioned by the Health Ministry.
Marriages between nephew and niece, second cousins and uncles and nieces pose an increased risk of rare genetic abnormalities in their children. Education and genetic research is needed to bring down the number of disorders, according to RIVM.
For an indication of the number of blood-related marriages, RIVM requested data from Generation R, a long-standing scientific population screening study in Rotterdam. The study follows the lives of ten thousand newly borns for a long period.
Of the 653 Turkish parents who partake in the study, 24 percent stated they were married to a relative. Among the 474 Moroccan parents, the number was 22 percent.
Marriage between relatives is not forbidden in the Netherlands. RIVM wishes to keep it that way, but does feel that blood-related marriages should be considered as a risk factor for congenital defects, just like late motherhood. The institute therefore advocates screening and prenatal testing.

Young Dutch Moroccans are increasingly turning to their religion. Anthropologist Martijn de Koning says this is a direct result of the current polarisation of the debate on Islam.
When during the late 1990s, Mr De Koning was finishing off his anthropology degree, he decided to research religious experience under young Moroccans at the same mosque in Gouda where he had supervised homework sessions during his study. At the time, the general perception was that young people were turning away from their religion. But things went differently.

Mr De Koning stresses that the type of Islam that young ethnic Moroccans have embraced has not taken on a solid character. Whether it will, depends mainly on the development of the Islam debate in the public arena. The researcher expects young ethnic Moroccans to get involved in the debate, which they have avoided so far. Now that appears to have changed.

The Netherlands has put 1.2 million euros of taxpayers money in Ma'an, a Palestinian news agency that glorifies terrorism and incites to hatred, according to newspaper De Telegraaf. The Party for Freedom (PVV) is demanding that Development Cooperation Minister Bert Koenders claim the money back.
Press agency Ma'an is according to Israeli organisation Palestinian Media Watch guilty of disseminating the Jihad ideology of Palestinian terrorists. Thus, Ma'an glorifies the terrorist that recently murdered eight Jewish yeshiva students in cold blood with the highest Islamic status of "martyrdom for Allah." The news agency denies Israel's right to exist by characterising the territory of the Jewish state as 'occupied Palestine', De Telegraaf revealed.
The propaganda of hatred only appears in the Arabic reports of the news agency and not in the English versions. The Dutch representative at the Palestinian Authority, Frans Makken, believes the use of terminology glorifying terrorism did not happen "deliberately," the Netherlands' biggest newspaper added.
PVV MP Raymond de Roon is furious and wants Koenders to distance himself from Makken. He is also demanding repayment of the 1.2 million euros to the Dutch state by the news agency.

Not a monoculture but a culture that draws on our Christian, Jewish, humanistic traditions and that poses a challenge to the Islamic problem. Children Told they are Dogs during Mosque Visit
A primary school in Amsterdam wished to provide its pupils with an understanding for other cultures. But during a visit to a mosque, the children were told they were dogs.
With a view to developing understanding and respect for other cultures among children, primary school De Horizon regularly organises outings to various religious organisations. The chairman of the El Mouchidine mosque told the children from group 7 (aged 10) and their chaperones however that non-Muslims are dogs.
In a letter to the children's parents, the school expresses its regret at the incident: "We are shocked that during the guided tour, the mosque's chairman told the children and chaperoning parents that non believers were dogs. We consider this statement as unacceptable since we allow our children to partake in this project to develop respect for freedom of religious choice".
In the meantime, the school's management has addressed the mosque on the undesirable behaviour of the chairman. Both parties will say nothing further on the matter. "We will resolve the matter amongst ourselves and I have no inclination whatsoever to discuss the matter with the media", as newspaper De Telegraaf quoted the school's spokesperson Mariet ten Berge. "We have been to the mosque before and it always went well".
Angry parents had sent the letter on to De Telegraaf but were reportedly rapped on the knuckles by the school's management. "The school wishes to play this down. That is precisely the problem", as one mother commented.

Court: Wilders Allowed to Call Islam a Fascist Ideology
MP Geert Wilders does not incite to hatred or violence against Muslims. His comparison of Islam with Fascism is permissible, a district court in The Hague ruled yesterday.
The Netherlands Islamic Federation (NIF) had put forward a number of statements by the Party for Freedom (PVV) leader in a summary injunction. The NIF considered that Wilders had broken the law by comparing Islam with Fascism, calling the Koran the Islamic version of Hitler's Mein Kampf and the Prophet Mohammed a barbarian. All remarks are legal, the court decided yesterday.
The foundation demanded that Wilders take back his statements. But the court said: "A parliamentarian must be able to put forward his views." And "the right of freedom of speech is decisive here."
Wilders does not have to make a correction. This would according to the court be the same as a forced apology and therefore at odds with the principle of freedom of speech. "Regret cannot be forced with a verdict," according to the ruling.
According to the court, Fascism must be viewed more broadly than the NIF does. The federation of Turkish Muslims associates the term with "malignancies of Nazi Germany" such as the Holocaust. But the court said Fascism is a "collective term for ideologies with principles that embrace a totalitarian political system that leaves no room for dissenters."
NIF did not disprove that ideas are prevalent in Islam that are at odds with democratic principles. The group also did not succeed, according to the judge, in refuting Wilders' view of Mohammed being a barbarian.

The controversial Islam-friendly exhibition El Hema is to travel to various Dutch towns thanks to a government subsidy.
El Hema could be seen in Amsterdam until last year. It is a parody of the department store chain Hema, one of the oldest Dutch retail formulas. El Hema shows a store that is completely converted according to the wishes of Muslims. All products are allowed by Sharia law; alcohol and pork are not for sale.
The 'multimedia platform' Kosmopolis has provided a subsidy to set up the exhibition for two months in Utrecht (from May), The Hague (from June) and Rotterdam (from September). El Hema was "a great success" earlier in Amsterdam, explained Kosmopolis.
Kosmopolis was set up in November 2006 by the cabinet to function as a 'House of Cultural Dialogue'. Former Media and Culture State Secretary Medy van der Laan chairs Kosmopolis.

School Exhibition Cancelled following Violence by Muslim Pupils
A school in Nijmegen yesterday cancelled a cartoon exhibition about discrimination following threats by Muslim pupils. Before this decision was taken, the exhibition was already literally destroyed.
Muslim pupils of the ROC Nijmegen, a large school with largely immigrant pupils, pulled cartoons from the walls shortly before these were to be presented officially. They also threatened to set the school alight. The school management decided to call off the opening.
In the exhibition, artists expressed their vision on discrimination in a humorist manner. "My expectation was that the pupils would be able to laugh about it", Ralph Sluis stated. He heads a local anti discrimination organisation. Sluis was the exhibition's coordinator.
A total of fifteen cartoonists worked on the exhibition. According to Sluis, the trouble was sparked by a work by cartoonist Peter de Wit, which shows two women in niqabs, the all-covering Islamic garments.
In the cartoon, one niqabed woman tells the other: "You filthy Muslim". The other one replies: "Yes I know, I'll wash". This woman smells bad, the cartoon shows.
The cartoon's message is that someone is not filthy if they wear a niqab. "A small group of pupils interpreted the cartoons in an entirely different way than the artist intended", Sluis stated.

Netherlands Wants No Explicit Statement on Freedom of Speech
The Netherlands will not ask for an EU statement that explicitly defends freedom of expression. This freedom in fact has limitations, suggested Premier Jan Peter Balkenende in the Lower House.
The Netherlands is seeking support from the EU in relation to the possible consequences of the Koran film that MP Geert Wilders wants to show on or around 28 March. The formal Dutch position is that both freedom of expression and freedom of religion must be respected.
The Netherlands hopes that its view can be incorporated in a joint EU statement if the film leads to violence. Balkenende does not want this statement drawn up yet. "A statement beforehand is problematic, as we do not know what the contents of the film is," he told the Lower House in a debate.
The premier plans to say to his EU colleagues at the Spring European Council today that a centuries-long battle was waged for freedom of speech and "that we need to cherish this." At the same time, this freedom is "no absolute right" but a right to which "responsibility" is attached.
The conservatives (VVD) called on the premier to ask the EU to state in the declaration that freedom of speech is only restricted by the ban on discrimination and incitement to violence. "Insulting or 'decency' do not come under this," said VVD MP Han ten Broeke. But Balkenende disagreed.
Balkenende repeated his already frequently expressed fear that "groups in Islamic countries" may misuse the film for "horrible things." He said however that the cabinet's position on Wilders' film - it cannot be banned although the government totally rejects it - is being well received in Islamic countries.
The secretary-general of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) has given Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen to understand that Wilders' film "will have serious repercussions that could get out of hand and be difficult to control." This statement appears in a OIC report discussed yesterday at the IOC summit conference in Senegal. Wilders is referred to eleven times, with a whole paragraph on his film - "a highly provocative documentary."

Integration Minister Also Accepts Refusal to Shake Hands
THE HAGUE, 14/03/08 - Integration Minister Ella Vogelaar does not see it as her job to interfere in Amsterdam, where Islamic public officials are permitted to refuse to shake hands with women.
Amsterdam's Labour (PvdA) Mayor Job Cohen permits 'street coaches' to refuse to shake hands with women on the basis of their religion. "Cohen is free to make his own decisions"," Vogelaar (PvdA) wrote yesterday in a letter to parliament.
Street coaches are (Islamic) citizens who assist the police in combating nuisance by (Islamic) youths. Cohen and Achmed Marcouch, the leader of Slotervaart district council, recently stated that street coaches in Slotervaart, even though they are public servants, do not have to shake hands with women. This ran into opposition from PvdA leader Wouter Bos, but he has meanwhile withdrawn his opposition.
"Shaking hands is the norm. Period," Bos said recently. But this week, he found that there could be "exceptions" after all. Vogelaar, too, considers that public servants "must due to their position be prepared to shake hands with everyone" because this is the social custom in the Netherlands, but that exceptions are no problem.

THE HAGUE, 14/03/08 - Integration Minister Ella Vogelaar does not see it as her job to interfere in Amsterdam, where Islamic public officials are permitted to refuse to shake hands with women.
Amsterdam's Labour (PvdA) Mayor Job Cohen permits 'street coaches' to refuse to shake hands with women on the basis of their religion. "Cohen is free to make his own decisions"," Vogelaar (PvdA) wrote yesterday in a letter to parliament.
Street coaches are (Islamic) citizens who assist the police in combating nuisance by (Islamic) youths. Cohen and Achmed Marcouch, the leader of Slotervaart district council, recently stated that street coaches in Slotervaart, even though they are public servants, do not have to shake hands with women. This ran into opposition from PvdA leader Wouter Bos, but he has meanwhile withdrawn his opposition.
"Shaking hands is the norm. Period," Bos said recently. But this week, he found that there could be "exceptions" after all. Vogelaar, too, considers that public servants "must due to their position be prepared to shake hands with everyone" because this is the social custom in the Netherlands, but that exceptions are no problem.

Dutch Establishment Threatens to Prosecute Wilders and Claim Damages

Geert Wilders, the Dutch politician who is making a 10-minute movie about Islam entitled Fitna (Arabic for “ordeal”), has felt compelled to cancel the March 28 press conference where he intended to show his film. The Nieuwspoort press center in The Hague, which is run by a board of journalists, publishers and government press officers, demanded that Wilders pay 400,000 euros for extra safety measures. “Apparently, you have to be a millionaire to organize such an event,” Mr Wilders said. “Even if I had the money I am not going to spend it on a press conference.”
No Dutch broadcaster, public or private, has been willing to show the film. There are indications that Fitna will also be banned on Youtube, which removed a clip featuring Mr Wilders two week ago, on so-called “ethical grounds”.
Dutch international companies, fearing a boycott of their products by Muslims, have announced that they intend to hold Mr Wilders responsible for a loss of profits and markets in the event of a boycott. They have asked Gerard Spong, one of the top lawyers in the Netherlands, to see whether a court case claiming damages from Wilders will be possible. Mr Spong and several other lawyers have already lodged some fifty formal complaints against the politician for “incitement to racial hatred and discrimination of Muslims” because Mr Wilders expressed the opinion that the Koran is “a fascist book which should be banned in the Netherlands.”
Last November, when Wilders announced he was going to make a movie expressing his view on Islam and the Koran, Doekle Terpstra, a member of the board of directors of the Anglo-Dutch multinational Unilever, told the Dutch media that “Geert Wilders is evil, and evil has to be stopped.” The Unilever director, anticipating a worldwide Muslim boycott of Unilever products (brands such as Axe, Ben and Jerry’s, Best Foods, Brooke Bond, Colman’s, Cif, Dove, Glidat Strauss, Heartbrand, Hellmann’s, Imperial Margarine, Knorr, Lipton, Pepsodent, Sunsilk, Unox, Vaseline, etc.), called upon the Dutch to “rise in order to stop Wilders from preaching his evil message.”
Mr Wilders, a member of the Dutch parliament, has been living under police protection for almost four years. Muslim fanatics have threatened to assassinate him for his outspoken criticism of Islam. The politician has no fixed residence and has to live in army barracks or other heavily secured premises.

THE HAGUE, Netherlands - Protesters already have torched Dutch flags in Afghanistan ahead of a new Dutch film portraying Islam's holy book as a "fascist" text that incites violence and preaches the oppression of women and homosexuals.
A Dutch cabinet minister postponed his trip to Somalia on Friday due to "specific threats" linked to the film, and the Dutch government has urged legislator Geert Wilders to scrap his film for the safety of its citizens abroad.
But Wilders said Monday he has begun negotiations with Dutch broadcasters about airing the 15-minute film, "Fitna." He said he will only allow them to show it in its entirety, and if they refuse, he plans to show it to the media and post it on the Internet.
"We have never learned to be intolerant toward people who are intolerant toward us, toward cultures that are intolerant toward us," he said in a recent Associated Press interview.
The right-wing legislator previously warned of a "tsunami" of Islam swamping the Netherlands and said Muslims should tear up half of the Qur'an if they want to live here.
Wilders has lived under round-the-clock security since the 2004 murder of filmmaker Theo van Gogh by an Islamic radical enraged by his short film, "Submission," a fictional study of abused Muslim women with scenes of near-naked women with Qur'anic texts engraved on their flesh.
The film "Fitna" - an Arabic word meaning discord - puts the centuries-old Dutch traditions of religious tolerance and freedom of speech on a collision course.
If it airs, Dutch Muslims are expected to file criminal complaints for racial or religious vilification. Prosecutors would then have to decide whether to charge Wilders with any offence.
"Our law is very clear - anybody can make a film. We have freedom of expression and you cannot restrict that," says Moroccan-born Sadik Harchaoui, chief of the Forum Institute for Multicultural Development.
"Can you offend people? The answer is yes. I'm not saying you should do it or it is desirable, but you can," he added. "But if the film is insulting and preaches hate, then the law has to take action."
The Dutch government says it cannot ban the film but is attempting to distance itself from Wilders, the leader of the Freedom party, which holds nine of parliament's 150 seats.
"It is our responsibility to make clear to everyone that the views and actions of this one elected representative are not those of the government," Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende told reporters last week. "We defend the core values of freedom and respect. We guarantee freedom of expression and of religion, for Muslims as for everyone else."
Already the film has provoked reactions from Damascus, Tehran and other capitals of predominantly Muslim countries.

Thirty ambassadors, based either in the Netherlands or in neighboring Belgium, attended the meeting.
The Dutch government has twice tried and failed to convince Wilders - the leader of the far-right Freedom Party - not to broadcast his film, fearing a repeat of the worldwide protests which met the publication of satirical Danish cartoons of the prophet Mohammed.
The Taliban in Afghanistan already have threatened retaliation against the 1, 660 Dutch soldiers in the country if the film is broadcast.
Verhagen pointed out that the "the government is fundamentally in disagreement with Wilders" and that "in the internal Dutch debate, both freedom of expression and religious liberty have their place."
Wilders, announcing his film project last autumn, said he was going to expose the Koran's "fascist" nature, which he compared to Hitler's "Mein Kampf".

Wilders has accused Balkenende of worrying more about the reaction of the Islamic world instead of defending Dutch democratic values and rights. "Let me make one thing clear: the film will be broadcast," Wilders said last week.

Dutch MP Alexander Pechtold wants the Netherlands to form a common front with other European countries to explain to Muslims around the world why the anti-Qur'an film by right-wing MP Geert Wilders has not been banned. The leader of the democrat party D66 wants the Dutch government to do more to spell out what democracy and freedom of expression exactly stand for in Europe.
The debate surrounding Mr Wilders' anti-Islam movie focuses too much on the Dutch context, according to Mr Pechtold.
Europe Mr Pechtold stresses, however, that the Netherlands should not go it alone but join forces with other European countries, which have a stake in this too.

Mr Pechthold does not, however, entirely share the prime minister's concerns.

The Public Prosecutor only can determine whether the film breaches any constitutional rights once it has been shown. Mr Wilders appears undeterred by all the commotion. He dismissed the prime minister's warnings accusing the cabinet of capitulating to Islam, something he vowed he will never do.

Europe Mr Pechtold stresses, however, that the Netherlands should not go it alone but join forces with other European countries, which have a stake in this too.
"The protests sparked by the Danish cartoons, for example, show this can happen to any country. In fact, we should now form a common front at the EU Council of Ministers. Democracy and freedom of expression are European inventions. But it now looks like each country is left to fend for itself."

The thing to do, therefore, is to reach people directly, bypassing governments, to explain what democracy entails. I really regard democracy as an export product. We shouldn't just pursue economic interests but also strive to make people aware of our democratic values."

Others include the multicultural students’ organisation SUN whose secretary Harun Yildirim tells the Volkskrant that Wilders just ‘says things in the media and then just turns off his phone so that he gets away with it time after time’.
And Jihad Alariachi, one of the presenters of the tv discussion programme Meiden van Halal (Halal Girls) tells the paper: ‘I understand that he [Wilders] is scared that voters will walk away if we confront him with arguments, but for someone who has no problem with labelling others as cowards, it’s cowardly.’
In reply to the Volkskrant’s question as to why he would not debate issues with Muslims, Wilders sent a text message to the paper saying that he would not do so until after his film is screened.

Cabinet looked at legal ban on Wilders film
The government has taken legal advice about banning Geert Wilders' short anti-Koran film, the Telegraaf reports on Monday, quoting sources close to the cabinet.
The paper says that the government's legal officials told ministers that going to court ‘need not be entirely hopeless’ because of the danger to national security and public order the film could provoke.

While stopping short of asking Wilders not to release the film, Balkenende said he was seriously worried about the effect it could have on Dutch citizens, soldiers and companies.
'It is our duty to point this out to Mr Wilders. That is why we are publicly speaking out,' Balkenende said after the weekly cabinet meeting.
'We have a duty to make clear to everyone that the methods and thoughts of one MP do not correspond to those of the government.'
Are these the same individuals that have the temerity to show up on Dutch television to announce that ISLAM IS THE RELIGION OF PEACE?!?
Perhaps this will put a period to that hypocrisy, at least by the Dutch, I don't see any way that moslems will see it...
And what will the implications be of the limiting of the 'FREEDOM OF SPEECH'?!?
Will the authorities in all of the dhimmi states of Europe then go on to curtail FREE SPEECH for all of their citizens?!? Ohhh I should clarify that, curtail FREE SPEECH only for the dhimmis, because their moslem overlords will be able to spout off about their jihad all they want...
In other words, limiting FREEDOM OF SPEECH for Geert Wilders will be just short of a 'death blow' to Western civilization...

The government has taken legal advice about banning Geert Wilders' short anti-Koran film, the Telegraaf reports on Monday, quoting sources close to the cabinet.
