Muslims Push for Public School Holidays

NEW YORK (NNPA) - A New York City councilman and 12 colleagues have sponsored a resolution calling on the state to require the Department of Education to incorporate the Muslim holidays of Eid Ul-Fitr and Eid Ul-Adha as observed holidays in the city’s public school calendar.

Immediately Mayor Michael Bloomberg called Resolution 1281 a “slippery slope,” saying students cannot afford more days off. “When you have a city as diverse as we do, with virtually every religion known to man practiced, if we closed school for every single day there wouldn’t be any school,” news reports quoted the two-term mayor as saying.

“The mayor’s reaction is not a surprise to me,” Councilman Robert Jackson (D-Manhattan), a Muslim, told The Final Call. “This resolution is clearly important because it shows respect for Islam,” the councilman added. “It also says to those who say no, are you willing to change as the population of New York City has changed?”

The resolution quotes from data supplied by Columbia University’s Middle East Institute’s NYC Project, which says the estimated Muslim population in the city is 600,000 people. According to the Coalition for Muslim School Holidays, 12 percent of NYC school students are Muslim, with 95 percent of Muslim school-age children attending public schools.Councilman Leroy Comrie (D-Queens) told The Final Call it was a “no-brainer” to support Resolution 1281. “I have at least seven mosques in my district. It is important to show that we will do whatever we can to work with all communities,” the deputy speaker of the council said. “If you are part of the city then you should be respected and acknowledged as everyone else is,” Councilman Comrie added.

A blogger, commenting in the New York Sun, the newspaper that broke the story, said, “school closings were old union negotiated holidays from back in the day when many of the teachers and students were Jewish; and that there is now a different demographic in the city.”

The state Department of Education’s website lists the following school closings: Rosh Hashanah (two days), Good Friday; non-religious holidays are Columbus Day, Presidents Day, Election Day, Memorial Day and Martin Luther King Day. Calls to education officials were not returned.

... The parade this Saturday will be the first one of its type in Binghamton. Following the parade, guest speakers will deliver speeches in front of the old Broome County Court-house. According to published accounts, the list of guest speakers includes the Rev. Douglas Taylor of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Binghamton and Diane O'Heron, a professor at Broome Community College.

Sounds like a genuine interfaith lovefest is to go on after the terrorists' do their parade thingy, while the idiot Unitarian Universalists - dhimmis all - remain totally unaware that in Islam-speak, Interfaith = 1 Faith = Islam.

Koran abuse draws hate-crime charge

A former Pace University student faces hate-crime charges for taking paperback copies of the Koran from the campus library on two occasions last fall and disposing of the Muslim holy book in toilets.

Stanislav Shmulevich, a Ukrainian immigrant, was arraigned Sunday in New York Criminal Court on two charges of criminal mischief in the fourth degree as a hate crime.

"The defendant, as a hate crime, intentionally damaged property of another while having no right to do so nor any reasonable grounds to believe that he had such a right," said the complaint filed by the New York County District Attorney's Office.

University officials filed a vandalism complaint with police after the first incident on Oct. 12, when "a copy of the Koran was found in a public toilet" at the Manhattan campus that "was covered in feces." A second copy of the Koran was found in a toilet Nov. 21.

When questioned by police, Mr. Shmulevich, 23, "admitted to committing said acts" and "that he committed the acts out of anger toward a group of Muslim students with whom he had had a recent disagreement," the criminal complaint said.

"We reported it initially as an act of vandalism, then the police hate-crime unit came over and decided to pursue it as a hate crime," said Chris Corey, Pace University spokesman, adding that he was "not at liberty" to discuss the investigation or how Mr. Shmulevich was implicated.

Mr. Shmulevich was arrested Friday after police found a surveillance photograph of him leaving the reading room where the books are kept, according to the Chronicle of Higher Education.

He was released from jail after a Sunday arraignment in New York City Criminal Court. Mr. Shmulevich has no criminal record, and works for a European banking firm. Straley M. Thorpe, Mr. Shmulevich's attorney, declined to discuss the specifics of the case, but said the law his client is charged with violating was challenged in past lawsuits on constitutional grounds.

NY man arrested for exporting weapons, jet fighter parts, to Malaysia

NEW YORK: A U.S. man was arrested Thursday on charges that he illegally exported weapons to a company in Malaysia, including fighter jet parts that were likely to end up in the hands of Iran, federal authorities announced.

Jilani Humayun, 59, was arrested at his home and charged with 11 counts of violating the Arms Export Control Act, one count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering. Collectively, the charges carry a potential jail term upon conviction of 150 years in prison.

In papers filed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan, federal authorities said Humayun formed a company, Vash International Inc., in January 2004 to export defense equipment including tanks, guided missiles and rocket launchers.

They said that on 11 separate occasions between January 2004 and May 2006, Humayun used Vash to export to an unidentified company in Malaysia F-5 and F-14 fighter jet parts and Chinook Helicopter parts.

In a release, prosecutors said Humayun admitted to federal agents that he did not know who the "end users" were for the items that were shipped. They said he also admitted that he undervalued the shipments on his export paperwork so that the company could avoid paying Malaysian customs duties.

The New York Police Department Counterterrorism Bureau has prepared a threat analysis of the thwarted London car bombings, NBC News reported on Sunday. The white paper, obtained by NBC, was written for private-security officials in the U.S. It finds that "there is no evidence of high explosives" in the two Mercedes sedans, and that the London bombs were "designed to inflict mass casualties."

The NYPD also speculates about the timing of the incidents and reports, among other things, that more than 100 British men recently received jihadist training in Iraq and then returned to the U.K.

"Approximately 150 Britons have traveled to fight in Iraq; a number are believed to have returned and formed 'sleeper cells,'" the NYPD writes.

Chestnut Ridge mosque's popularity causes parking issues

CHESTNUT RIDGE - Popularity can have its pitfalls.

Consider the Jerrahi Mosque as an example.

When it opened in the mid-1970s, the mosque offered services from a house off Route 45 (Chestnut Ridge Road).

A few years later, after acquiring adjacent property, it moved into a larger building it had renovated.

The number of parking spaces, about 25, approved by the village, seemed adequate, but it wasn't long before they rapidly filled as word of the mosque's presence spread.

Some members of the congregation took to parking on the heavily traveled Route 45, which the Ramapo police frowned upon, and also in an adjacent school parking lot.

The latter eventually became unavailable, leading congregants to park on Joyce Drive, a road off the west side of the highway and opposite the mosque.

For about 10 years, according to some members, congregants have parked on that street.

So it came as a surprise last week when they found notices on their windshields announcing new parking regulations.

The rules enacted by the village prohibit parking on most of the north side of Joyce Drive, as well as on both sides along a curve in the road. Parking already was prohibited on both sides near Route 45.

"We can't park on Route 45, so people have been parking on Joyce," said Azra Fasihuddin, a mosque member. "We park on both sides, but we've been careful not to block driveways or fire hydrants."

Sabbath services on Fridays draw the congregants, who come from New Jersey and Orange County, as well as Rockland.

The prayer services are from 1 to 2 p.m., so congregants arrive about 12:30 and leave about 2:30, said David Lowenthal, another member.

"When we started, this was plenty," he said, gesturing toward the mosque's paved parking lot. "But it grew. More people moved into the area, or those who didn't know about it, heard about it."

Lowenthal, an elder member, said the congregation considered building another lot at the rear of the property, but deemed it too difficult and expensive.

Members of the mosque now have permission from the East Ramapo school district to park at the adjacent Chestnut Ridge Middle School through the end of August, but will have to find another spot once classes resume in September.

Lowenthal said the congregation was exploring options that included seeking space in a town of Ramapo commuter park-and-ride lot, south of the mosque off Route 45.

It might also petition residents of Joyce Drive "to see if we could ask for a break during those (sabbath) hours," Lowenthal said.

The new restrictions clearly upset Fasihuddin.

"This is just harassment, as far as we see it," she said.

Not so, said Mayor Jerry Kobre, who said it was a safety issue.

The parking restrictions were enacted after firefighters and ambulance corps members expressed concern.

"They said there wasn't enough room for emergency vehicles to get through with parking on both sides," Kobre said.

Village Trustee Howard Cohen said he later toured the street.

He said it was impossible for two cars to pass when others were parked on both sides.

That resulted in drivers "weaving in and out" of spaces in front of driveways so one could pass, Cohen said.

Kobre said the village's engineer reviewed the potential for a lot behind the mosque. He said it was feasible, and could be covered with stone, instead of being paved, to save money.

"We're certainly not trying to interfere with their services," Kobre said. "It's strictly a safety situation."

Merrill Lynch sued in Muslim-bias case

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission sued Merrill Lynch & Co. yesterday over its treatment of an Iranian Muslim employee.

The worker, Majid Borumand, claims he was denied promotions and ultimately fired because of his ethnicity and faith.

Merrill Lynch spokesman Mark Herr said the company is innocent. "We regret the EEOC believes there are grounds for its filing," he said. "We respectfully, but strongly, disagree with the EEOC and deny all of Mr. Borumand's allegations."

The EEOC said Mr. Borumand was hired in 2002 under an immigration program that allows U.S. firms to recruit talented foreigners; Mr. Borumand has a doctoral degree in theoretical physics and a master's in mathematical finance.

While employed at the company, Mr. Borumand was subjected to "remarks that reflected animus toward his national origin and religion," the EEOC said in a complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan.

The EEOC said that on one occasion, Mr. Borumand was told that "the reason you are not allowed on the trading floor is because you are from a country which has a high risk factor and a threat."

The federal agency identified Mr. Borumand as an analyst in Merrill Lynch's global markets and investment banking model development group.

But the company disputed that description, instead saying he was a senior programmer in a global equity technology group.

Murdered Muslim cleric had links to JFK plot suspect

GEORGETOWN, Guyana - As murder mysteries here go, few are as intriguing as the execution-style killing of an Iranian Muslim cleric with links to a key suspect in the alleged JFK airport bombing plot.

Mohamed Hassan Ibrahimi was abducted by two gunmen in April 2004. His body was found several weeks later, face down in a shallow grave. He had been shot twice in the head. His mouth was taped and his hands and feet were tied.

The homicide made a brief splash and then turned into a cold case over the next three years - until earlier this month, when prosecutors in New York charged three Guyanese men and one Trinidadian with plotting to bomb the city's John F. Kennedy International Airport.

Ibrahimi was a close friend of one of the men accused, Abdul Kadir, a former opposition member of Guyana's parliament. Ibrahimi received money from Iran and changed it at a currency exchange business where another of the accused, Abdel Nur, sometimes ran errands, and where a suspected al Qaeda member and former South Florida resident wanted by the FBI, Adnan el Shukrijumah, was spotted in 2003. The business' owner was slain last month.

Kadir, Nur and Trinidadian Kareem Ibrahiim are jailed in Trinidad pending U.S. extradition requests. The fourth man accused, Russell Defreitas, a Guyanese-born U.S. citizen, is being held in New York. Two of Kadir's sons were arrested in Guyana on Sunday on charges of illegal possession of ammunition.

At the time of Ibrahimi's disappearance and death, Guyana's Muslim organizations were quick to deny speculation that the case was linked to international terrorism or clashes between Shiites and Sunnis. Other speculation centered on a robbery attempt gone bad or a settling of business scores.

Acting Guyana Police Chief Henry Greene told The Miami Herald he would not speculate on who killed Ibrahimi or why.

''Initially, we felt it was a kidnapping. But there was no demand for a ransom,'' said Greene, who was head of criminal investigations at the time. ''We could not find a motive for the killing. Just another one of those strange killings.''

But the slaying was certainly of importance to the Iranian government. Four Iranian police officers and Tehran's ambassador in neighboring Venezuela came to ask about the case. Even television crews from Tehran turned up in this South American nation.

''We don't know if it was normal practice,'' Greene said of Iran's interest. ''It looked to me like there was a national interest.''

But when Guyanese investigators began asking Iranian officials about Ibrahimi, Greene said, Tehran never responded. ''Believe you me, we never got anything.''

Representatives at the Iranian Embassy in Venezuela, contacted by The Miami Herald, declined to comment on the case or provide background information on Ibrahimi. His wife, Shabnaz, who was eight months' pregnant with their first child at the time of the abduction, returned to Iran after the killing.

Little is known about Ibrahimi, 35, other than he was a Shiite Muslim cleric who established permanent residence in Guyana in 2000 under a work permit requested by a man in Guyana, identified by Greene as Zenjibari Ali.

New Castle neighbors speak on mosque plans

NEW CASTLE - Neighbors of a proposed mosque and Islamic center on the west side of town detailed a series of concerns about noise, traffic and other changes to the neighborhood at a meeting last night. A handful called for the town to reject the mosque plans.

The residents spoke at the first major meeting to gather public opinion on the Upper Westchester Muslim Society's plans for a 24,690-square-foot building on more than 8 acres.
They talked about the narrow roads leading to the land at Pines Bridge at Hoag Cross roads, and concerns that the building will be lit at night and won't produce property-tax revenue.

"Those of us who moved there, moved there for a reason," Gary Ramuno, a direct neighbor of the property, told the Zoning Board of Appeals, which must grant a special permit if the mosque is going to be built. "It's a quiet, rural neighborhood that doesn't have a lot of traffic right now."
Several members of the Muslim Society also attended the meeting in New Castle Town Hall but didn't speak to the board. Before the meeting, Lamyaa Elzoghby said they came to support the application and show that they are normal and that not all Muslims are terrorists.

"I want to see how people react when they see us as families with children, normal," said Elzoghby, who lives in Yorktown Heights and whose husband, Hussein Elzoghby, is on the board of the Muslim Society.

The Muslim Society, which has about 35 member families, was formally organized in 1997 and now holds prayer services in rented office space in Thornwood. Anees Shaikh, who lives in Yorktown and is the vice president of the society's executive committee, said the location limits the things the society can do, including religious education for the children and weekly prayer services.

Shaikh said there isn't a large growth in the population of Muslims in northern Westchester, but the Islamic center building is needed because of a growing demand for the services it can provide, especially education for second-generation Muslim-Americans, and for outreach to neighbors. About 80 to 100 people attend Friday prayers.

"I don't think our needs are really that different than any other faith group in the area," he said.

TEL AVIV (Dow Jones) -- Bear, Stearns & Co. and a group of Saudi executives have agreed to form a 50-50 asset-management joint venture, providing traditional investment products and developing specific offerings that comply with Sharia, or Islamic law.

The executives are led by Prince Mishaal Bin Abdullah Bin Turki Al-Saud, chief executive of Zad Investment Co., which manages his family's investments.

The new Bear Stearns Arabia Asset Management, which the New York investment bank (BSC) said in a statement is its first step into the Persian Gulf region, will be registered in Saudi Arabia and headquartered in Riyadh.

Targeting wealthy clients, the venture's traditional offerings will include equity, fixed-income, hedge-fund and private-equity opportunities.

Al-Saud will be chairman of the venture. Michel Peretie, CEO of Bear Stearns International Ltd., and Christian Yates, head of international operations for Bear Stearns Asset Management, will sit on the board.

The new firm joins Bear Stearns's asset-management expertise "with a deep knowledge of the investment needs and preferences of large investors in the kingdom" and the Persian Gulf region, Al-Saud said in the statement.

Peretie added that Bear Stearns hopes to develop relations with other Gulf Cooperation Council states, with the goal of offering "not only asset-management products but also a full range of trading, brokerage and advisory services."

The GCC ties together the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar and Kuwait to help the nations coordinate efforts on their economies, trade, customs, tourism, science, education and culture and more.

WASHINGTON - A Guyanese police official on Sunday said that one of the four men charged with conspiring to blow up Kennedy International Airport once was the business partner of the leader of a radical Muslim group that tried to overthrow the Trinidad government in 1990.

Acting Guyana Police Commissioner Henry Greene also said the man, Abdul Kadir, a Guyanese citizen, also had a business link to Mohamed Ibrahimi, an Iranian citizen mysteriously killed in 2004 in Guyana.

Greene's comments bolstered reports that Kadir and the other alleged conspirators were seeking support from Muslim radicals in the Caribbean and elsewhere for their plans to blow up jet fuel pipelines and storage tanks at the New York City airport. But there is no evidence that they’d succeeded in winning that support.

The revelations of Kadir’s ties to other Muslim radicals came as terrorism and pipeline experts cast doubt on U.S. authorities’ depiction of the possible consequences of the alleged plot.

Alleged Terror Plot Foiled at JFK Airport

NEW YORK — Three people were arrested and one other was being sought in connection to a plan to set off explosives in a fuel line that feeds John F. Kennedy International Airport and runs through residential neighborhoods, officials close to the investigation said.

The plot, which never got past the planning stages, did not involve airplanes or passenger terminals, according to the two officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because details of the arrests had not yet been announced.

A senior law enforcement official told FOX News that of the three arrests, one was in New York and two were in Trinidad. The New York suspect has been identified as Russell Afreitas, a former JFK employee who allegedly planned to attack the airport's fuel supply because he thought he could do more damage than attacking a passenger terminal. Afreitas is a Muslim U.S. citizen from Guyana.

In carrying out the alleged plot, Afreitas unknowingly recruited an FBI informant, and surveillance on Afreitas began.

One of the other suspects arrested in Trinidad was identified as Abdul Kabir, a member of Parliament of Guyana.'Details were to be given out at a 1 p.m. news conference.

4 Charged In Plot To Blow Up Jet Fuel At JFK

According to NewsChannel4's Jonathan Dienst, sources said federal investigators have made arrests in an alleged terror plot on Kennedy Airport.

Four people have been charged. One is in custody in New York. Three suspects are thought to be overseas, perhaps under arrest.

Law enforcement officials said the plot may involve a former airport worker.

Experts say terror organization is morphing, waiting for opportunity

NEW YORK - There is a saying in the tribal areas that span the Afghanistan-Pakistan border lands, one that is usually expressed with a sly smile: “The Americans have the watches. We have the time.”

The underlying message, of course, is quite clear: Al-Qaida and the Taliban have the patience they need to reconstitute and refocus their operations, using different models than those they used prior to Sept. 11, 2001, and working perhaps on different targets.

And things certainly seem to be changing. Roger Cressey, former deputy director of counterterrorism at the National Security Council and now an NBC News analyst, points out that, once again, al-Qaida has morphed into what another analyst, Peter Bergin, calls "al-Qaida 3.0."

The first version was a hierarchal organization; the second was more inspirational, meant to spur a series of loosely affiliated groups allied around a central idea.

“We are now dealing with a hybrid phenomenon,” Cressey says. “Al-Qaida the organization has reconstituted in a way that they can reach out to the jihadi movement and provide homegrown terrorists with facilities and empowerment, particularly through links in Pakistan.”

But have the terrorists lost anything in that morphing? Are they as capable worldwide? And are the changes — with their accompanying lack of major support mechanisms and reliance on simpler and more local organizational structures — forcing it to postpone attacks on the United States and other Western targets? That would be the ultimate act of patience.

Four NBC News military and counter-terrorism analysts, including Cressey, along with other experts, disagree on the many of the answers. Some point to a number of events the last several months that could indicate a resurgence of the al-Qaida threat across the world. But others believe that those same events show al-Qaida has made a conscious decision to think smaller — to focus on moderate Sunni Muslim regimes, such as Saudi Arabia, Morocco and Algeria, as well as weak states like Iraq — rather than trying to mount attacks on the United States.
For these analysts, al-Qaida is doing what other terrorist groups do on a smaller scale: Avoid the hard target and focus more on the soft.

US Muslims sign intra-faith code

A group of Muslim Americans in Detroit may have set a trend by signing an intra-faith code of conduct based on respect for all religions and belief systems.

Last week, around 30 Muslim community leaders in the Detroit area, home to the largest Muslim community in the US, almost wholly of Arab origin, signed an “Intra-Faith Code of Honour”. The pact calls for stressing commonalities rather than differences. The code also condemns the use of disparaging or insulting language about other religions or sects and the labelling of others as non-believers or kafirs. To end the Muslim sectarian divide, fuelled by the large number of illiterate mullahs who have come here on religious visas, the code calls on congregations to follow the traditions of the majority in a particular mosque.

The code also calls for avoiding “imported literature that is divisive, inflammatory, and irrelevant to the future of Islam in America.” Materials sent from Saudi Arabia in the past have often denigrated Shias as well as Christians and Jews. The code was initiated by the Muslim Public Affairs Council in Los Angeles. A number of prominent Muslim community leaders in Southern California signed it last month and others are expected to follow the lead.

Young Muslims steeped in American life are tuning out imams brought in from foreign countries to teach Islam.

Like any good Muslim, Ali Karjoo-Ravary went to mosque on Friday seeking spiritual inspiration. What the 19-year-old Iranian-American found, however, was something completely different.

At the head of a mosque in upstate New York, a foreign imam was leading the Friday service. Sitting on the floor with the other congregants, Mr. Karjoo-Ravary strained to understand the religious leader's thick accent. Even as he made out the imam's words, the message made little sense. "The entire sermon was about 'Don't let a girl pat your back. It can lead to things,' " Karjoo-Ravary recounts.

The imam's disconnect with American culture shocked Karjoo-Ravary. Trying to gauge the reaction of other young congregants, he spotted a cluster of teen­agers and 20-somethings toward the back of the mosque. They were hunched over and appeared to be earnestly listening to the imam's every word. But looking closer, he realized their attentive postures were meant to conceal cellphones. The entire group had tuned out the sermon and was texting busily.

For many American-born Muslims, experiences like Karjoo-Ravary's are not uncommon. Over the past 40 years, hundreds of thousands of Muslims from around the world have emigrated to the United States, bringing their own cultural interpretations of Islam and electing imams who support their views. This practice worked well until recently, when large numbers of these immigrants' Westernized children reached adulthood, creating a disconnect between faith and culture. Foreign imams are at the center of this fast-growing divide between immigrant Muslims and their American-born children.

When Muslim immigrants flooded into the US from the Middle East and South Asia in the 1960s and '70s, their "first priority was to preserve their cultural integrity," says Johari Abdul-Malik, an American-born imam in Sterling, Va., and president of the Muslim Society of Washington, Inc. "The need for an imam from their background is … to preserve the cultural authenticity of that community."

Immigrant imams have served this purpose well, but the children of this immigrant wave – now adults – identify more with US culture than the one found in their parents' homeland. As a result, they find themselves increasingly at odds with foreign imams, who lead 85 percent of non-African-American mosques in the US, estimates the Islamic Society of North America. A mosque's imam is selected by its congregants, who often want someone fluent in Arabic, which is the language of the Koran.
