Iran asks Japan to pay yen for crude oil
Iran has asked Japanese buyers of its crude oil to switch payment to the yen from dollars as it faces growing pressure from the West over its nuclear programme, a customer said.
'Our company received a document from Iran asking Japanese lifters to switch the payment to the Yen earlier this week,' the customer said.
The source was not aware when the company would switch the payment currencies.
Iran had informally asked its Japanese customers to switch to non-US dollars several times since late last year.
But it was the first time for Japanese customers received an official written notification for the switch to yen, the source said.
Tehran has been seeking to limit dollar-denominated trade as Washington leads efforts to isolate the Islamic Republic over its atomic programme.
Washington has slapped sanctions on two Iranian banks. UN sanctions have targeted one.
Iran is the fourth largest oil supplier to Japan, shipping 323,000 barrels of crude per day in May, according to Japanese government data.

Australia 'to join missile defence study'
JAPAN and the US plan to expand a joint study on missile defence by adding Australia amid concerns about North Korea's weapons program, a news report said today.
Japan and the US have been stepping up efforts to build a joint missile defence system following North Korea's nuclear test in October.
Australia would join the two countries to share information on missile defence and discuss how to respond to various situations, Japan's business daily Nikkei reported, citing unnamed officials at Japan's Defence Ministry.
Defence Ministry officials could not immediately confirm the report.

Japan deploys own ballistic missile defences
TOKYO - Japan on Friday deployed its first ballistic missile defence system managed by its own military amid concerns over North Korea, which tested missiles and an atom bomb last year.
The United States last year installed Japan’s first anti-missile system, but the interceptors deployed Friday were the first installed by Japan on its own.
Two Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3) surface-to-air interceptors were installed early Friday at Japan’s Iruma air force base north of Tokyo, a defence ministry spokesman said.
The ministry plans to deploy the US-developed PAC-3s, which can cover a 20-kilometre (12-mile) radius, at a total of 11 bases in eastern and western Japan by March 2011.
The ministry deployed the launchers, designed to protect the capital Tokyo, earlier than initially scheduled in response to North Korea’s launch of missiles in July and its nuclear test in October.
‘We had initially planned to complete the deployment by March next year, but we accelerated the plan following North Korea’s missile launch,’ the spokesman said.
It was Japan’s first deployment of a ballistic missile interceptor since the nation became officially pacifist following its defeat in World War II.

Invasion of Iraq a mistake: Japan
America's invasion of Iraq was a mistake based on a faulty assumption, Japan's Defense Minister said Wednesday.
Fumio Kyuma said he has never supported the war on Iraq.
Bush's decision to attack Iraq "based on an assumption that weapons of mass destruction existed was a mistake," Kyuma told a news conference.
Despite Bush's plan to boost troop numbers, Japan will not hastily decide whether to extend its airlifts in support of American-led forces in Iraq, Kyuma said.

Japan's first major Islamic finance seminar kicks off
By Miyoko Ishigami (with photos) TOKYO, Jan 22 (KUNA) -- An international seminar on Islamic finance opened here Monday with about 300 delegates discussing such topics as overview and regulatory aspects of Islamic finance, legal and Shari'ah (Islamic law) issues and opportunities for Islamic finance in the world's second-largest economy. Japan's first full-fledged seminar on Islamic finance is aimed at facilitating further understanding of the global Islamic banking industry among local financial community, according to the Islamic Financial Services Board (IFSB), the co-organizer of the event.
The IFSB is a Malaysia-based organization set up by Muslim countries, of which the Central Bank of Kuwait (CBK) is a founding member. Established in 2003, IFSB's membership has grown to 110 members, including Kuwait Finance House (KFH), Boubyan Bank and seven other Kuwaiti financial institutions. At the outset of the two-day forum, Dr. Rifaat Abdel Karim, the IFSB Secretary-General, welcomed the Japanse government's decision to tap the Islamic capital market.
"The move will help develop the market for the issuance and trading of a broader range of Shari'ah compatible long-term financial instruments." With its assets worth more than USD 300 billion and annual growth exceeding 15 percent, Islamic financial service industry promises great potentials, Dr. Karim stressed.Islamic financing is based on Shari'ah, or Islamic law, which prohibits charging or paying interest.
Instead, there are schemes for partnerships in trade in goods and services, direct investment and renting as well as profit sharing. Shari'ah also bans financing businesses related to alcohol, pork, gambling and weapons.
The line-up of speakers includes Salman Younis, Managing Director of Kuwait Finance House and Governor of Bank Negara Malaysia, the country's central bank, to share their experience in Islamic finance with an audience of officials from government agencies, central banks and major financial institutions from the Middle East and Asia.
