Tarek ibn Ziyad Academy (TIZA) -- named for the Muslim general who conquered medieval Spain -- is a K-8 charter school in Inver Grove Heights. Its approximately 300 students are mostly the children of low-income Muslim immigrant families, many of them Somalis.

The school is in huge demand, with a waiting list of 1,500. Last fall, it opened a second campus in Blaine.

TIZA uses the language of culture rather than religion to describe its program in public documents. According to its mission statement, the school "recognizes and appreciates the traditions, histories, civilizations and accomplishments of the eastern world (Africa, Asia and Middle East)."

But the line between religion and culture is often blurry. There are strong indications that religion plays a central role at TIZA, which is a public school financed by Minnesota taxpayers. Under the U.S. and state constitutions, a public school can accommodate students' religious beliefs but cannot encourage or endorse religion.

TIZA raises troubling issues about taxpayer funding of schools that cross that line.

Asad Zaman, TIZA's principal, declined to allow me to visit the school or grant me an interview. He did not respond to e-mails seeking written replies.

TIZA's strong religious connections date from its founding in 2003. Its co-founders, Zaman and Hesham Hussein, were both imams, or Muslim religious leaders, as well as leaders of the Muslim American Society of Minnesota (MAS-MN).

Since then, they have played dual roles: Zaman as TIZA's principal and the current vice-president of MAS-MN, and Hussein as TIZA's school board chair and president of MAS-MN until his death in a car accident in Saudi Arabia in January.

Recently, I wrote about Tarek ibn Ziyad Academy (TIZA), a K-8 charter school in Inver Grove Heights. Charter schools are public schools and by law must not endorse or promote religion.

Evidence suggests, however, that TIZA is an Islamic school, funded by Minnesota taxpayers.

TIZA has many characteristics that suggest a religious school. It shares the headquarters building of the Muslim American Society of Minnesota, whose mission is "establishing Islam in Minnesota." The building also houses a mosque. TIZA's executive director, Asad Zaman, is a Muslim imam, or religious leader, and its sponsor is an organization called Islamic Relief.

Students pray daily, the cafeteria serves halal food - permissible under Islamic law -- and "Islamic Studies" is offered at the end of the school day.

Zaman maintains that TIZA is not a religious school. He declined, however, to allow me to visit the school to see for myself, "due to the hectic schedule for statewide testing." But after I e-mailed him that the Minnesota Department of Education had told me that testing would not begin for several weeks, Zaman did not respond -- even to urgent calls and e-mails seeking comment before my first column on TIZA.

Now, however, an eyewitness has stepped forward. Amanda Getz of Bloomington is a substitute teacher. She worked as a substitute in two fifth-grade classrooms at TIZA on Friday, March 14. Her experience suggests that school-sponsored religious activity plays an integral role at TIZA.

Arriving on a Friday, the Muslim holy day, she says she was told that the day's schedule included a "school assembly" in the gym after lunch.

Before the assembly, she says she was told, her duties would include taking her fifth-grade students to the bathroom, four at a time, to perform "their ritual washing."

Afterward, Getz said, "teachers led the kids into the gym, where a man dressed in white with a white cap, who had been at the school all day," was preparing to lead prayer. Beside him, another man "was prostrating himself in prayer on a carpet as the students entered."

"The prayer I saw was not voluntary," Getz said. "The kids were corralled by adults and required to go to the assembly where prayer occurred."

Islamic Studies was also incorporated into the school day. "When I arrived, I was told 'after school we have Islamic Studies,' and I might have to stay for hall duty," Getz said. "The teachers had written assignments on the blackboard for classes like math and social studies. Islamic Studies was the last one -- the board said the kids were studying the Qu'ran. The students were told to copy it into their planner, along with everything else. That gave me the impression that Islamic Studies was a subject like any other."

After school, Getz's fifth-graders stayed in their classroom and the man in white who had led prayer in the gym came in to teach Islamic Studies. TIZA has in effect extended the school day -- buses leave only after Islamic Studies is over. Getz did not see evidence of other extra-curricular activity, except for a group of small children playing outside. Significantly, 77 percent of TIZA parents say that their "main reason for choosing TIZA ... was because of after-school programs conducted by various non-profit organizations at the end of the school period in the school building," according to a TIZA report. TIZA may be the only school in Minnesota with this distinction.

Why does the Minnesota Department of Education allow this sort of religious activity at a public school? According to Zaman, the department inspects TIZA regularly -- and has done so "numerous times" -- to ensure that it is not a religious school.

But the department's records document only three site visits to TIZA in five years -- two in 2003-04 and one in 2007, according to Assistant Commissioner Morgan Brown. None of the visits focused specifically on religious practices.

Muslims to get floor sinks at airport by fall
New, sanitary facilities for ritual foot-washing will serve taxi drivers

Floor sinks to accommodate prayer requirements for Muslim taxi drivers will be installed at Indianapolis International Airport by fall.

David Dawson, a spokesman for the airport project, said this week that two bathrooms, one for men and one for women, will have the sinks. Both will be in a 900-square-foot building where taxi drivers gather before picking up passengers at the terminal.

Many of the taxi drivers are Muslims who pray five times a day. The prayer involves many rituals, including washing the feet.

Drivers now use hand sinks at the existing terminal, which has caused safety hazards.

"The result of that is there is standing water on the floor and structural stress on the sink," Dawson said.

That created a sanitation problem and was the main reason the floor sinks were proposed, he said.

Osmand Djama, 44, a taxi driver who uses the facility, said about 180 taxi drivers, most of whom are men, use the bathroom, making it unsanitary.

According to Dawson, the cost of the sinks is estimated at $750 each. They are expected to be installed by the end of October, the same time construction on the new midfield terminal should be completed.

The Airport Authority Board approved the installation plan in February despite some public objection and criticism from a local minister.

The Rev. Jerry Hillenburg of Hope Baptist Church in Indianapolis, whose son was killed in Iraq in 2004, called the sinks unconstitutional and said they showed a dangerous concession to Islam. Hillenburg and his supporters rallied at Hope Baptist Church against the sinks last fall.

Marc Monte, pastor at Faith Baptist Church in Avon, attended the rally. He said installing the sinks indulges a globally violent religious group.

"I continue to oppose (the plan) on the grounds that it shows preferential treatment to that religion," he said. "I don't think the Airport Authority is going to let me install a baptismal font to baptize people in."

Read all about this (and Osama is even involved). But wait, it's also in Minnesota. And in New Jersey (Nat'l Group for Communications & Computers Ltd. v. Lucent Technologies Int'l, Inc., 331 F. Supp. 2d 290 (D.N.J. 2004)).

Oddly enough, the American courts treat this as a perfectly normal matter. In the first two cases I cited, the parties entered into a contract that provided for Sharia arbitration; the courts considered challenges to the arbitral process, and upheld the awards. The third case involved a contractual provision expressly stating that disputes about the contract would be resolved under Saudi Arabian law; the court then dutifully investigated what the Saudi rules (which are built on Sharia) would call for, and rendered judgment "based upon this Court's review of various academic texts, the testimony of the experts, the submissions of the parties, and the Court's understanding of the fundamental principles of Islamic law as they would be interpreted by a court in Saudi Arabia."

Imams' bias suit drops passengers

An attorney for six imams removed from a US Airways flight in November 2006 at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport said in federal court Tuesday that his clients will not sue the passengers who reported that the men were acting suspiciously.

The attorney, Frederick Goetz of Minneapolis, said the focus of the lawsuit now "is always where it has been."

"The motion was to amend the complaint to name the responsible individuals. The responsible individuals are all government officials or employees of US Airways," Goetz said. "We're simply doing what the law requires to vindicate the denial of the imams' civil rights."

The imams' suit, filed March 12, alleges the group was illegally removed from the Phoenix-bound flight "on the basis of their perceived race, religion, color, ethnicity, alienage, ancestry, and/or national origin; lied to about the reasons they were removed; unlawfully searched; and denied an attorney."

The suit targets US Airways and the airport but also listed "John Does" as defendants. Originally, the suit described "John Does" as passengers who contacted the airline to report that the imams were acting suspiciously. The suit later was amended to identify them as those who "may have made false reports" against the imams with the intent to discriminate against them.

The six men were returning from a conference in Minneapolis at the time of the incident.

Muslim Lawmaker Cries Foul

Aides to the country’s first Muslim congressman say they were blindsided by a stinging condemnation from the Anti-Defamation League because it came after the lawmaker had told the ADL that he planned to recant his comparison of Bush administration policies to Nazi tactics.

U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) in a July 8 speech to an atheists’ group in Minnesota compared Bush administration policies after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks to Adolf Hitler’s use of the burning of the Reichstag to consolidate his rule.

After Ellison defended his remarks in a subsequent interview with the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the ADL reached out to him to discuss the issue and convinced him that it was inappropriate to use such an analogy.

Ellison aides and ADL staff in the ADL office here spent much of Tuesday negotiating the language of his recantation, both sides said. It was understood that Ellison would release a statement expressing regret over his earlier comparison and make his feelings known in an interview with The Associated Press.

So Ellison aides said they were shocked when, before the congressman released his statement and the AP article was distributed, journalists called asking about an ADL statement slamming his earlier remarks. The statement said Ellison demonstrated "a profound lack of understanding about the horrors that Hitler and his Nazi regime perpetrated."

Keith Ellison comes from most diverse district in Minnesota, and he advised the Muslim women to be inclusive in their pursuit of public office. "Do not go to the Muslim community and tell them I am Muslim, vote for me. Do not do that. Figure out what the people need and speak to that and make sure to be universal enough to also appeal to the Christian community, to the Jewish community, to the Arab, non-Arab, Asian, non-Asian, to the African, and non-African. Make sure it is universal."

Ellison won his seat in Congress last year. And as a former community activist, he sought to inspire the women with a message. "That civic engagement is very important, that the voices from the communities are indispensable to democracy, that their voices are important, that they should help inspire and make a way for other people to get out there and say what they think should be the policy of the state. And that there is a lot to be offered in peace, justice, environmental policy, health care and certainly women's issues are very important for all of us to be concerned about."

The Muslim women taking part in the summer program come from the U.S, Canada, Belgium, Holland, the Philippines, Senegal, Syria and Saudi Arabia. Ellison urged them to draw from the lessons and teachings of Islam about working out differences and bridging gaps of race, gender and class.

"Those lessons speak to religious tolerance. Those lessons speak to gender equality -- are the things we should rely on -- and we should never feel that the world of Islam should ever operate on the basis of fear because from fear we get exclusion, from fear we get harsh actions, desperate actions and regretful actions. We should always have faith and go forward in a way that promotes generosity, inclusion and tolerance,” he said.

Ellison told the women that they are going to shape their communities by promoting equality and defending human rights for all.

America's first Muslim congressman has provoked outrage by apparently comparing President George W Bush to Adolf Hitler and hinting that he might have been responsible for the September 11 attacks.

Addressing a gathering of atheists in his home state of Minnesota, Keith Ellison, a Democrat, compared the 9/11 atrocities to the destruction of the Reichstag, the German parliament, in 1933. This was probably burned down by the Nazis in order to justify Hitler's later seizure of emergency powers.

"It's almost like the Reichstag fire, kind of reminds me of that," Mr Ellison said. "After the Reichstag was burned, they blamed the Communists for it, and it put the leader [Hitler] of that country in a position where he could basically have authority to do whatever he wanted."

To applause from his audience of 300 members of Atheists for Human Rights, Mr Ellison said he would not accuse the Bush administration of planning 9/11 because "you know, that's how they put you in the nut-ball box - dismiss you".

Vice-President Dick Cheney's stance of refusing to answer some questions from Congress was "the very definition of totalitarianism, authoritarianism and dictatorship", he added.

Mr Ellison also raised eyebrows by telling his audience: "You'll always find this Muslim standing up for your right to be atheists all you want."

A convert to Islam who was previously linked to the extremist Nation of Islam, Mr Ellison, 42, has cultivated a moderate image since being elected last November, concentrating on issues such as health and education.

He is an outspoken critic of the war in Iraq. But he angered his own anti-war supporters by voting for a budget bill that aims to end the war over the next 18 months. His followers want an immediate withdrawal of US troops from Iraq.

After his speech was reported, Mr Ellison said he accepted that Osama bin Laden was responsible for 9/11. But his demagogic comments threaten to plunge him in controversy.

Mark Drake, of the Republican party in Minnesota, said: "To compare the democratically elected leader of the United States of America to Hitler is an absolute moral outrage which trivialises the horrors of Nazi Germany."

The truth about Keith Ellison

From the moment Minnesota Fifth District (Mineapolis) Rep. Keith Ellison first arrived on the scene from Detroit and started making a name for himself as a law student at the University of Minnesota, he was a mouthpiece for the Nation of Islam and its revolting ideology. Over the imprecations of his Jewish classmates, for example, Ellison helped bring raving anti-Semitic Nation of Islam speaker Kwame Toure to the the University of Minnesota Law School itself in February 1990.

As a public figure in private practice Ellison befriended the gang leader whose minions committed the most notorious cop killing in Minnesota history. Ellison's contributions included leading a mob chanting "no justice, no peace" outside the courthouse in support of one of the defendants subsequently convicted of the murder of the police officer. Ellison made himself a low-rent Louis Farrakhan (if that's possible), even going through a phase during which he appeared in public with the trademark Farrakhan bow tie in the mid-1990's. There was nothing original about his act.

When Ellison sought to remake himself as a potential national figure, he took to prevaricating and dissembling about his long-time Nation of Islam involvement. Fortunately for Ellison, the Minneapolis Star Tribune cooperated with his makeover by airbrushing his public record in Minnesota. That is the story I told here throughout the summer and fall of 2006, summarizing my research in the Weekly Standard article "Louis Farrakhan's first congressman" and in the companion post "Keith Ellison for dummies."

Ellison cast his Nation of Islam act aside after he failed to secure the Democratic nomination for a state legislative seat in 1998, though he was still plying some of the old-time religion in the course of defending cop killer wannabe Kathleen Soliah/Sara Jane Olson at a National Lawyers Guild fundraiser for Soliah in 2000. By that time Ellison was working Marxist shtick on his path to power in the local Democratic Party.

Ellison now embodies the Democratic Party's alliance with radical Islam. How Ellison reconciles his Islamic faith with the party's devout belief in homosexual rights, leftist feminism, and every other element of the party's most radical agenda is a subject that the Minnesota media have somehow left unexplored.

Blaine school, civil rights group strike a quick accord in a complaint over Muslim students being harassed.

A complaint about the harassment of Muslim students at a Blaine middle school has been resolved, with the school district being praised for its response.

The Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Minnesota) filed a complaint last month that a Muslim student at Westwood Middle School was called a "terrorist." Two other Muslim students alleged that food was thrown at them.

In an agreement announced Thursday, the school will incorporate information about world religions into its geography curriculum, assign a diversity coordinator and create a "school climate task force" of students and faculty.

"They have really made a wonderful effort," said CAIR Vice Chair Thasneem Ahmed. "We are very pleased with the steps they have taken."

Don Helmstetter, superintendent of the Spring Lake Park School District, said he still regrets that the matter reached the complaint stage but is happy with its resolution.

"I feel bad when any parent has an issue that they need to take to an outside party," he said.

"But the good news is that the people at CAIR know who we are now, and they know that if they have another issue, they can call us up and feel that we will deal with it quickly and appropriately."

MINNEAPOLIS (Reuters) - For Mahamed Jama, a Minnesota taxi driver, the Islamic restriction on drinking alcohol is a seamless rule for life.

"He who carries alcohol, he who drinks and he who sells it are the same thing," he says.
That belief could affect his livelihood.

The commission that runs the Minneapolis airports in May began enforcing a new policy allowing it to revoke the licenses of drivers who refuse to ferry passengers carrying alcohol -- something that has happened to 4,854 travelers trying to get a cab at Minneapolis International Airport in the last five years.

"The increased penalties appear to have brought drivers into compliance," airport spokesman Patrick Hogan said of the policy -- a 30-day license suspension for a first infraction and a two-year license revocation for a second.

Although Hogan said the measure was implemented without incident, it has provoked outrage among some of the 900 cab drivers who work the airport. About three quarters of them are Somali, most of whom are Muslim.

"A few of them are really, really upset about it," said Omar Jamal, executive director of the Somali Justice Advocacy Center in neighboring St. Paul. "They believe they have been forced into something against their faith, something against their religion."

Nevertheless, Jamal's group does not support the stand taken by the drivers. "We don't understand why they do this," he said. The issue is really "a process of getting adjusted to new territory, new culture."

Ahmed Rehab, executive director of the Chicago office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said the drivers are using a "strict and rigid" interpretation of Islamic law.

But Stephen Cooper, former commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Human Rights, said the change from the previous policy, in which drivers refusing a fare went to the back of the line, is unwarranted.

"Five or six times a month, somebody will get the second or third cab, rather than the first cab," Cooper said. "That seems pretty minor."

The Muslim congressman from Minnesota who used a Quran for his swearing-in ceremony now is cavorting with the Muslim American Society, and either should distance himself from that group – or resign, say critics.
As WND has reported, Ellison also allowed his election supporters to shout, "Allahu Akbar!," the same phrase allegedly used by the 9/11 suicide pilots, and he has confirmed to reporters that "in terms of political agenda items, my faith informs these things."

Regarding Ellison's speech last month at the Muslim American Society's annual conference in Minneapolis, Joe Kaufman, founder of Americans Against Hate, warned, "This is of grave concern."

In an article at FrontPage Magazine as well as in a news statement, Kaufman said: "Not only is it a conflict of interest for a member of the U.S. House of Representatives to participate with such groups, but it is, as well, an issue of national security. Those in positions of power must demand an end to Keith Ellison's dangerous and bigoted associations. Either that or they must insist on his resignation."

As WND reported earlier, it was in 2000 when Ellison joined Bernadine Dohrn, one of the founders of the 1960s radical group the Weather Underground, and several other speakers at a fundraiser for then-recently arrested Kathleen Soliah, a.k.a. Sara Jane Olson.

"While Ellison spoke, the group was actively spreading vitriolic hatred and violence aimed at Jews, Christians and other non-Muslims via its website," Kaufman's statement said.

He cited the following statements on that group's Internet site:

"The Holy Prophet (and through him the Muslims) has been reassured that he
should not mind the enmity, the evil designs and the machinations of the Jews..."

"In view of the degenerate moral condition of the Jews and the Christians, the Believers have been warned not to make them their friends and confidants."

"If you gain victory over the men of Jews, kill them."

"The Hour will not be established until you fight with the Jews, and the stone behind which a Jew will be hiding will say, 'O Muslim! There is a Jew hiding behind me, so kill him.'"

"May Allah destroy the Jews, because they used the graves of their prophets as places of worship."

"A Muslim must always worship Allah and wage jihad until death in order to reach his ultimate goal… Regularly make the intention to go on jihad with the ambition to die as a martyr."

"On Monday, June 4th, the Chairman of Americans Against Hate (AAH), Joe Kaufman, phoned the local and Washington, D.C., offices of Congressman Ellison to demand that he denounce MAS. Kaufman has received no response from the Congressman or anyone in his offices," the statement said.

Ellison's office also did not respond to a WND request for comment.

"When Keith Ellison ran for office, he denounced the anti-Semitism of Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam (NOI), a group that he was previously affiliated with. We demand that he do the same to the Muslim American Society. It is not only improper for a United States Representative to participate with such groups, but it is a danger to national security," Kaufman said.

He noted that Ellison also spoke to the MAS organization in December, 2006, shortly after he was elected.

MINNEAPOLIS- It was a prom for girls only, where more than 100 Muslim teenagers could take off their headscarves, let loose and dance, experiencing an American rite of passage without violating Islamic culture and values.

The Saturday night PROM—Party foR Only Muslimahs, or Muslim girls—at the University of Minnesota's Coffman Memorial Union provided a chance for the girls to participate in a major high school experience.

Many Muslim girls don't attend their high school prom because they aren't allowed to dance with the opposite sex, and prom dresses can be too revealing for some Muslim girls to wear in public.

"I'd hate to miss this," said Sabrina Wazwaz, 15, a freshman who goes to Twin Cities Academy in St. Paul. "I think it's really nice how they thought of the Muslim girls who can't go to the American prom, so they made this for us."

"I thought it was an awesome idea," said Sagirah Shahid, 18, one of the main organizers and president of the Muslim Youth of Minnesota. Shahid is a senior at Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis.

"We want to encourage Muslimahs to have fun but not do anything they're not supposed to. It's a positive alternative to the real prom," she said.

The event included dinner, performances by the girls during a talent show, a fashion show of clothing from different cultures and dancing.

Minnesota College begins Islamization Makeover

The first public US college in the nation has now earnestly begun the Islamization of its campus. We presume this is only the first of many other colleges and universities that will now follow suit. Minneapolis Community & Technical College announced in March that it will renovate its bathrooms, in order to install ritual foot-washing basins for Muslims’ who are preparing for their prayers. Although the Star Tribune’s Katherine Kersten reports that the college’s Director of Legal Affairs Dianna Cusick stated that it is unconstitutional to promote any religion and “the Constitution prevents us from doing this in any form”, it strongly appears that this is precisely what the college is doing—by promoting its provision of deference to Islam.

As an example of the college’s inequitable behaviors - specifically as pertains to Christianity - during the 2006 Christmas season, a coffee cart on campus was barred by college officials from playing music that is “tied to Christmas.” Acknowledgements of the Christmas season were also banned and Ms. Cusick advised College President Phil Davis in a memo: “As we head into the holiday season all public offices and areas should refrain from displays that may represent to our students, employees or the public that the college is promoting any particular religion.” The only things that appeared to be glaringly missing from her memo were ‘promoting any particular Christian religion’ and ‘exceptions to this rule will be granted to Muslims’. Considerations and shouts for “separation of church and state” only apply to Christian separation. Note: US (and specifically Minnesota) taxpayers fund the college’s practices.

Note: The Quran appears to make no negative comments against Muslims who begin wars and then continue to wage them against non-Muslims. That’s acceptable to Islam—and even seems to be encouraged. Apparently, our colleges and universities now agree that Islam is superior to all other cultures and religions (or at the very least political-correctness trumps everything else on the planet) and must be given special allowances and privileges.

Several years ago, I wrote the column “Will Humans PC Themselves Out of Existence?” Now, it appears that we—as a species—are well under way towards affecting it. We already have Islamic training being required and even promoted in our grammar and middle schools. However, similar Christian training is disallowed.

Again, this is an example of the SCOTUS ruling that bestowed upon us the errant philosophy of “separation of church and state” that is now being applied only to Christianity. The pro-Muslim war against and elimination of Christians is alive and well in all aspects of US society. And it is our taxpayer money that is being used for the purge of Christianity and it is another nail being hammered into the coffin of the USA. I wonder how soon it will be until our country is renamed to the USI—United States of Islam. Don’t you?

(CNSNews.com) - Litigation threats against vigilant citizens who report suspicious activity could impede intelligence-gathering efforts and empower terrorists, counter-terrorism experts and security officials warn.

Exhibit A: A lawsuit filed against unnamed "John Doe" defendants who expressed alarm over the allegedly suspicious behavior of six Muslim imams on a U.S. Airways plane last November. The clerics were removed from the plane before the Minneapolis to Phoenix flight departed, as a result of multiple reports from concerned fellow passengers.

The Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) is suing U.S. Airways and Minnesota's Metropolitan Airports Commission on behalf of the imams.

The suit, Shqeirat, et.al v. U.S. Airways Group, also cites unnamed "John Does" described as "passengers at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport who contacted U.S. Airways to report the alleged 'suspicious' behavior of plaintiffs' performing their prayer at the airport terminal."

CAIR attorney Omar Mohammedi has said the litigation only targets individuals who knowingly made false claims with the intent to discriminate against the imams, in contrast to those who made reports in "good faith." CAIR Executive Director Nihad Awad has argued the suit is designed to protect religious and civil rights.

But Leon Laylagian, vice president of the Passenger Cargo Security Group, told Cybercast News Service the Muslims behaved in a manner that was "unusual regardless of religion."

Laylagian also said there was a very real possibility that the clerics' actions were a deliberate, planned tactic designed to diminish the public's motivation and willingness to respond when they observe unsettling or suspicious activity.

Muslim cab drivers face stiffer fines for refusing to pick up customers with alcohol

MINNEAPOLIS: The operator of the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport moved closer on Monday to approving penalties for cab drivers who refuse service to customers carrying alcohol, as some Muslim drivers have done for religious reasons.

The panel of the Metropolitan Airports Commission voted to suspend a driver's airport taxi license for 30 days for the first offense and revoke it for two years for a second offense.

Commissioner Mike Landy said the entire commission was to vote on the penalties later Wednesday.

The issue went before went before the panel after a months-long dispute in which passengers said they were being denied taxi service by some Muslim drivers if they were transporting alcohol. Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport officials say more than 70 percent of the cab drivers at the airport are Muslim.

The drivers, however, have argued that Islam forbids the carrying of alcohol.

Ritual-washing area for Muslims at MCTC may be only the beginning

Last week, I wrote about Minneapolis Community and Technical College, which is planning to install facilities to help Muslim students perform ritual washing before daily prayers. It's a simple matter of extending "hospitality" to newcomers, says President Phil Davis -- no different than providing a fish option in the college cafeteria for Christian students during Lent.

MCTC is apparently the first public institution in Minnesota to enter this unfamiliar territory. Where is it looking for guidance?

Dianna Cusick, MCTC's director of legal affairs, is overseeing the project. She referred me to the Muslim Accommodations Task Force, whose website she is using as a primary resource (www.startribune.com/2617). "They've done all the research," she said.

On the site, I found information about the handful of public colleges that have "wudu," or ritual bathing, facilities.

But I also discovered something more important for colleges seeking guidance on "accommodations": Projects like MCTC's are likely to be the first step in a long process.
The task force's eventual objectives on American campuses include the following, according to the website: permanent Muslim prayer spaces, ritual washing facilities, separate food and housing for Muslim students, separate hours at athletic facilities for Muslim women, paid imams or religious counselors, and campus observance of Muslim holidays. The task force is already hailing "pioneering" successes. At Syracuse University in New York, for example, "Eid al Fitr is now an official university holiday," says an article featured on the website. "The entire university campus shuts down to mark the end of Ramadan." At Henry Ford Community College in Dearborn, Mich., "halal" food -- ritually slaughtered and permissible under Islamic law -- is marked by green stickers in the cafeteria and "staff are well-trained in handling practices."

At Georgetown University, Muslim women can live apart in housing that enables them to "sleep in an Islamic setting," as the website puts it. According to a student at the time the policy was adopted, the university housing office initially opposed the idea, on grounds that all freshman should have the experience of "living in dorms and dealing with different kinds of people." That might sound appealing, Muslim students told a reporter in an article featured on the website. But in their view, the reporter wrote, "learning to live with 'different kinds of people' " actually "causes more harm than good" for Muslims, because it requires them to live in an environment that "distracts them from their desire to become better Muslims, and even draw[s] weaker Muslims away from Islam."

The task force isn't operated by overly enthusiastic college students. Its professional staff, based in the Washington, D.C., area, includes coordinators who provide legal advice, teach students to lobby, write letters on their behalf, and help them overcome "obstacles" such as college administrators' concerns about violating the separation of church and state.

The Muslim Accommodations Task Force is a project of the Muslim Student Association of the U.S. and Canada. MSA's mission is to enable Muslims here "to practice Islam as a complete way of life," and its "main goal" is "spreading Islam," according to its website. The association calls itself the "landmark Muslim organization in North America," and says it has chapters on 600 campuses.

CAIR-MN seeks investigation, reasonable religious accommodation(MINNEAPOLIS, MN, 4/2/07) - The Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MN) today called for an investigation of the alleged firing of Muslim employees at a chicken processing plant in Wisconsin who wanted to offer religiously-mandated prayers in the workplace.

CAIR-MN says two workers were fired and three others quit in protest last night at the Gold'n Plump Poultry plant in Arcadia, Wis. The workers are all of Somali heritage and live in nearby Minnesota.The workers told CAIR that the dispute centered on a "floating break" used to offer their break-of-dawn (fajr) prayer, one of five daily Islamic prayers. They say the company had accommodated the prayers with a floating break for at least the past several months, but issued a new policy last Friday that forced the workers to choose between their religious practices and their jobs.

Each of the workers contacted by CAIR says the processing line was never shut down while the prayers took place. They said that when the Muslim workers offered their prayers, employees of other faiths filled in for them, and when those workers took their break, the Muslims worked to keep the line moving.CAIR's national office contacted Gold'n Plump, which is headquartered in St. Cloud, Minn., to seek its perspective on the incident. The statement issued by the company differs from the workers' accounts of the incident. It states in part:"Because of the number of our employees with a desire to pray outside of the regularly scheduled breaks, we recently implemented a new floating break schedule to accommodate prayer needs.

"This new schedule went into effect at our Production Plant in Arcadia, Wis., on Sunday, April 1. While we were able to successfully accommodate virtually all employees with prayer needs immediately, there were a few positions that because of limitations of the line would require more time to make the necessary changes."Though we advised these few employees that we were committed to accommodating their needs and could do so within weeks, they were unwilling to give us the necessary time and made the decision to quit."

"Companies have a legal duty to offer reasonable religious accommodation to employees unless they can prove there is an 'undue hardship' resulting from that accommodation," said CAIR National Civil Rights Manager Khadija Athman. She said the fact that the processing line apparently never stopped moving appears to remove any claim of undue hardship.

Athman said CAIR is asking the company to investigate the incident, to reinstate all five of the Muslim workers and to ensure that all polices are in conformity with federal laws requiring religious accommodation in the workplace.

She said CAIR offers a booklet, called "An Employer's Guide to Islamic Religious Practices," designed to prevent such incidents from occurring.

MUSLIM WORKER THREATENED IN SOUTH CAROLINA

FBI asked to probe incident as possible hate crime(WASHINGTON, D.C., 4/2/07) - A prominent national Islamic civil rights and advocacy group today called on the FBI to investigate alleged threats against a Muslim worker in South Carolina as a possible hate crime.

The 66-year-old Muslim worker told the Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations that fellow employees at a BMW Manufacturing Co. plant in Spartanburg, S.C., have repeatedly made Islamophobic comments such as, 1) "Muslims are no good. They should all be killed," and 2) "We will f**k up your family, we'll kill you all." Other comments allegedly disparaged Islamic attire and suggested that Muslim women be raped.

According to the Muslim employee, one of the abusive co-workers confronted him in a facility restroom on March 31st and put a box-cutter to his throat, saying: "I'll slice your throat and kill you."

The Muslim employee says company officials did not take appropriate action against the assailant when the incident was first reported. A report has been filed with the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office (case number 2007040040).

"We call on local authorities and the FBI to investigate this disturbing incident as a possible hate crime," said CAIR Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. "Americans of all faiths should be free from threats and intimidation in the workplace."

CAIR, America's largest Islamic civil liberties group, has 32 offices and chapters nationwide and in Canada. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.

The U.S. Islamic community stands to lose face yet again in upcoming months as two frivolous cases of "discrimination" that have taken headlines finally gain some closure. For all the bad press and embarrassment, Muslims can thank the charges of two of the largest Muslim-American "rights" groups in the country - the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and the Muslim American Society (MAS).

CAIR and MAS are not the neighborhood NAACP chapter or ACLU crowd, as they are known for their links to Saudi money and the violent Muslim Brotherhood, respectively. And, notwithstanding their size, neither organization is much abashed in its support for terrorist sympathizers and financiers. Both have postings on their Web sites asking readers to protest the detention of Sami al-Arian - the former Florida professor who pled guilty last year to conspiring to provide support to a terrorist organization.

Now, MAS and CAIR are preparing for legal fights in Minnesota over much-publicized airline safety and cab service disputes that they are as sure to fight as they are to lose. Of course, the only thing that will come of the lawsuits is more perceived victimization of the mainstream Muslim-American community - conveniently, to the profit and increased relevance of MAS and CAIR.

That either group purposefully plays on ethnic and religious tensions for gain is hardly disputable. Exhibit A is the case of the "flying imams." Three days before Thanksgiving last year, six bearded Muslims were removed from a US Airways flight departing from Minneapolis for Phoenix for what national news outlets simply called "praying."

Within hours of the incident MAS issued a knee-jerk press release calling for protests and an immediate apology from the airline (no need to get all the facts first). This month, CAIR and the imams filed a lawsuit for compensatory damages as a result of the "discrimination" (and then, almost comically, kicked out Washington Post reporters and a Christian Broadcasting Network news crew from its press conference).

Even today, MAS and CAIR stand by the fiction that the imams were somehow quietly praying before being, suddenly, inexplicably, handcuffed and thrown off the airplane.

In fact, flight attendants and passengers have come to explain that, after shouting "Allah Akbar" in prayer, the imams configured on the plane in the same seating arrangement as the Sept. 11 hijackers. Three of the imams asked for seatbelt extensions - used for obese people, which the imams were not, and which could alternatively be used as weapons. Passengers fluent in Arabic also told flight attendants that some of the imams were angrily denouncing U.S. foreign policy, Iraq and a host of other not-so-discrete topics.

Short of waving box cutters at the flight crew, the imams did just about everything they could to get noticed, and, rightfully, US Airways still sticks by its pilots and flight attendants for removing the now-plaintiffs. Yet despite its meager odds of winning the lawsuit, CAIR is leading a legal fight that will both seek to weaken airport security and get plenty of sound-bite misrepresentations bound to flare emotions and ignite who-knows-what kind of religious accusations. That, evidently, is the goal.

MINNEAPOLIS--The land of 10,000 lakes and that welcoming attitude we call "Minnesota Nice"--is becoming a window on America's potential future. Here in Minneapolis, one of the nation's most livable cities, hard-line Muslim activists are injecting an element that is anything but nice.

Troubling incidents began several years ago, when taxi drivers at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport--about three-quarters of whom are Muslim--started refusing to transport passengers carrying alcohol. One woman, returning from France with wine, was turned away by five cabs in succession. Refusals of service now number about 100 a month, and heated altercations have erupted.

In September 2006, the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) proposed a two color top-light pilot project to indicate which drivers would accept passengers with alcohol. The proposal, later dropped, would apparently have marked the first time that a government agency in the U.S. officially recognized Shariah law, and distinguished individuals who follow it from those who don't.

In November 2006, the six "flying imams" bumped the taxi drivers from the headlines. In Minneapolis for a conference, the imams were detained after engaging in what an airport police report called "suspicious" activity. Some prayed loudly in the gate area, spoke angrily about the U.S. and Saddam, switched seats and unnecessarily requested seat belt extenders with heavy buckles that could be used as weapons, according to witnesses. They were questioned and released later that day. The imams denounced the incident as racial and religious profiling. "If up to now, [Americans] don't know about prayers, this is a real problem," said Omar Shahin, one of the detained men and head of the North American Imams Federation. Twin Cities imams demanded a separate Muslim prayer room at the airport.

Earlier this month, the six imams filed suit in U.S. district court in Minneapolis against US Airways and the Metropolitan Airports Commission, claiming discrimination and defamation. Now some Muslim cashiers at Twin Cities Target stores have begun refusing to scan pork products, like bacon and pepperoni pizza, and insisting that other cashiers or the customers themselves do it.

The events here suggest a larger strategy: By piggy-backing on our civil rights laws, Islamist activists aim to equate airport security with racial bigotry and to move slowly toward a two-tier legal system. Intimidation is a crucial tool. The "flying imams" lawsuit ups the ante by indicating that passengers who alerted airport authorities will be included as defendants. Activists are also perfecting their skills at manipulating the media. After a "pray-in" at Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C., one credulous MSNBC anchor likened the flying imams to civil rights icon Rosa Parks.

The comparison is misplaced: Omar Shahin, leader of the detained imams, has helped raise money for at least two charities later shut down for supporting terrorism. From 2000 to 2003, he headed the Islamic Center of Tucson, which terrorism expert Rita Katz described in the Washington Post as holding "basically the first cell of al Qaeda in the United States." CAIR has long been controversial for alleged terrorist ties, while the Chicago Tribune has described MAS as the American arm of the fundamentalist Muslim Brotherhood, which "preaches that religion and politics cannot be separated and that governments eventually should be Islamic."

So far, Minnesotans have said a resolute "no" to Muslim activists' agenda; in an informal Star Tribune poll, 92% of respondents blamed the imams' own behavior for their airport detention. And Target--after unsuccessful attempts to accommodate Muslim cashiers--is reassigning them to other jobs. Still, there is a sense that we've seen just the opening skirmishes. As MAC spokesman Patrick Hogan put it, "I think people are afraid there will be a chapter two."
