Mark Steyn writes, “Permanence is the illusion of every age." In 1913 no one thought the Russian, Austrian, German and Turkish empires would be gone within half a decade. Seventy years ago, all those who dismissed Reagan as an “amiable dunce” assured us that the Soviet Union was likewise here to stay. In 1987, there were no experts predicting the imminent fall of the Berlin Wall, the Warsaw pact countries or the U.S.S.R. itself. And yet, all those things happened and supposedly nobody saw it coming. The clash of civilizations described in this book is coming and it’s been on the march for some time.

How many times does a leader and a populace have to chant “Death to America! Death to Israel! and Death to the West” before our political leaders take note? Even Newsweek magazine, certainly not known for its conservative slant or bias, featured an article by Babak Dehghanpisheh and Christopher Dickey, entitled “The Next NuclearThreat” in its February 13, 2006 issue. The article states that Israeli intelligence suggests that a workable Iranian nuclear weapon may be only a year away. The article also went on to point out that not since the Ayatollah Khomeini was alive in the 1980’s has Iran provoked so many regional and global tensions. “This is the war generation,” said Massoud Denhmaki, a documentary filmmaker in Iran. The survivors of the savage battles between Iraq and Iran in the 1980’s have now assumed political power. The younger generation now populating the schools have the attitude that “(A)n Islamic renaissance is starting from here…We are witnessing the start of a fundamentalist uprising in the region from the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt to Hamas, Hezbollah and Mr. Ahmadinejad in our own country.
