Mosque sermon sparks complaints
By Chris Buratta
A row has erupted over plans for a Christian minister to give a sermon at a Muslim prayer ceremony.
The Muslim Education Centre of Oxford (Meco) is hosting a religious 'first' tomorrow, when Christian minister the Rev Peter Hewis preaches as part of its weekly service.
But Meco chairman Dr Taj Hargey, who invited Mr Hewis to speak, said the plan had sparked a reaction from some Muslims within the community who were against a non-Muslim speaking at Friday prayers.
Dr Hargey said: "The reaction from some Muslims in Oxford is that we should not allow a Christian to preach at a Muslim service.
"They are making all kinds of noise that we should be opposed to this idea."
Dr Hargey said he had received objections from about a dozen people.
But he stressed that the service would go ahead as planned.
He said: "They think a Muslim prayer ceremony should only be for Muslims, but if your religion is open and inclusive anyone can come."
