Goldsmith has radical preachers in his sights

A drive against Islamist fanatics is being launched by the Government today to counter the growing radicalism that could fuel a new wave of terrorist bombings.

Police and prosecutors are to be encouraged to go after firebrand ''preachers of hate'' and bring more to justice.

At the same time, a £6 million ''hearts and minds'' campaign will woo moderate Muslims in an attempt to separate them from the fundamentalists.

The strategy is being spearheaded by Lord Goldsmith, the Attorney General, and Ruth Kelly, the Communities Secretary.

Lord Goldsmith said there will be a new national co-ordinator against extremism heading up a unit within the Metropolitan Police Counter Terrorism Command. He will liaise with a network of senior police and MI5 officers investigating Muslim radicals in the regions.
