DAR AL HARB - AUSTRALIA: SHEIK AL HILALI (UNCOVERED MEAT SHEIK) MISHANDLED FUNDS ?!?

Muslims should hold Sheik to account: PM

The Lebanese-Muslim community in Sydney should hold Sheik Taj Aldin Alhilali to account for funds he helped distribute in strife-torn Lebanon, Prime Minister John Howard says.

But Mr Howard avoided commenting on whether a police investigation was warranted into claims Sheik Alhilali mishandled tens of thousands of dollars.

Sheik Alhilali has been accused of failing to account for $US38,000 ($A47,000) from donations raised in Australia and earmarked for victims of last year's Israel-Hezbollah war.

It has been reported that after taking charge of the money in Lebanon, the mufti gave at least $US10,000 ($A12,400) to a supporter of the Iraqi insurgency, Sheik Bilal Shaaban, to fund his radio station.

Sydney's Lebanese Muslim Association (LMA) has confirmed that in November last year it sent nearly $A70,000 for the sole purpose of humanitarian aid to an employee, Sheik Yahyi Safi, in Lebanon.

Sheik Alhilali met with Sheik Safi in Lebanon and helped distribute the money, the organisation said.

While Sheik Safi had provided formal documentation for the funds he distributed, Sheik Alhilali had not yet provided official receipts.
