Homeland Security Woos American Muslims
DEARBORN, Mich. - In addressing a Senate committee, Homeland Security chief Michael Chertoff said that his department recognizes that extremists are only a small, fringe element in the American Arab and Muslim community, and that radicalism encompassed a wide range of threats,” not just in the Muslim community, reports The Arab American News. Chertoff’s comments echo sentiments in the Arab American community, the Arab American News reports. Chertoff recognized that Arab Americans and American Muslims deplore terrorist violence and have made strong contributions to stable, peaceful and economically successful communities in the United States. He encouraged Arab Americans and Muslim Americans to take leadership roles representing more than just their religious and ethnic enclaves by serving in elected and appointed government positions. Homeland Security officials said that federal agents are being trained in cultural and religious issues of importance to the community. In particular, airport security personnel are trained in how to screen and search individuals who are Muslim. The officials asked in return that community leaders explain the necessity of security procedures such as questioning at an airport or border. At a dinner after the hearing, Chertoff asked the community to help expected Iraqi refugees with resettlement.
When will the MICHIGAN INTIFADA begin?!?
