Battle can only be won by educating our young Muslims

WE have seen another series of police raids in Birmingham aimed at suspected militants.

What we must do now is to give the police time to charge, or release, these men.

It would be extremely worrying if prosecutions do not emerge.

If that were to happen, it would do a great deal of damage to the confidence held in the police.

Yet those who question the police's motives and actions should understand that this principle is not shared by the extremists they often claim to admire.

Two types of response can be identified in the Muslim community to the arrests: one from older so-called 'first generation' individuals and other moderates, the other from younger Muslims born and raised in the UK.

The older members of the community did all they could to stress support for the police operation and to distance themselves from the alleged actions of the arrested men.

They do not wish to see the Muslim community in Birmingham tarred with the same brush as those who would seek to perpetrate acts of terror in the name of Islam.

They came to Britain seeking to share in the security and prosperity of British society, to adapt to its ways and not to attack its very foundations.

But a very small element of mostly young Muslims in Birmingham have been taken in by the aggressive and self-congratulating rhetoric of certain extremist groups.

They believe they have a moral authority over the rest of the community, holding this arrogant and abusive attitude towards the law-abiding majority.

Radicals believe they can say whatever they want without fear of consequence.

What they need to understand is that it is only because of the freedoms we have in the UK that they can get away with such statements and actions.

These radicalised youths say they are against everything that non-believers do. They incite hatred against not just nonMuslims but also against those in their own community who do not subscribe to their extremist views.
