No legal case against Danish imams in Prophet cartoons ro
COPENHAGEN: Danish prosecutors have decided not to press charges against a group of imams accused of tarnishing Denmark’s image over the Prophet cartoons crisis, a prosecutor said yesterday.
Prosecutor Birgitte Vestberg rejected 110 complaints filed by members of the public against the religious leaders and other Danish Muslims who spoke out against the government during their tour of Egypt, Lebanon and Syria in December 2005.
Two delegations of Danish imams visited the countries to draw the attention of political and religious authorities to the Danish government’s silence over the publication of 12 satirical cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad in Denmark’s biggest newspaper.
“We found no proof that the imams and other Muslims ... constituted a threat to Danish interests nor incited attacks against Denmark,” Vestberg said.
