USA-MASSACHUESETTES: 2 IMAMS ARRESTED IN BOSTON, VISA FRAUD CASE

2 Imams Arrested At Boston Mosques
Scheme To Secure Visas For Religious Workers Suspected

BOSTON -- Federal immigration agents arrested two imams from Boston-area mosques Wednesday.

Paula Grenier, spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, told the Boston Globe that they were Hafiz Abdul Hannan, leader of the Islamic Society of Greater Lowell in Chelmsford, and Muhammed Masood, leader of the Islamic Center of New England in Sharon.

Agents said 33 people were arrested after a nationwide investigation into visa fraud.

Grenier said those arrested were suspected of participating in a scheme to secure visas for religious workers.

She said once the immigrants entered the United States, however, they were getting secular jobs, which is not permitted under the Religious Worker Program.

Grenier said people of different faiths have been arrested in similar investigations and that the arrests were not related to homeland security.
