Islamic group buys site for school
The Islamic Society of Milwaukee has purchased a commercial building and its 11-acre site at 801 W. Layton Ave. for $4.2 million and is moving ahead with plans to renovate part of the structure for school use, society President Othman Atta said Monday.
The building is a few blocks from the society's Islamic Center at 4707 S. 13th St., which houses a mosque and the Salam School.
"We're just bursting at the seams," Atta said.
The society also is considering buying a building at W225-N4140 Duplainville Road in the City of Pewaukee for a mosque for its growing Muslim population in the western suburbs, he said.
