Taxpayers To Cough Up For BBC Arabic
The BBC is launching a new television channel - in Arabic - to be paid for by the British taxpayer.
It will begin broadcasting for 12 hours a day on Tuesday, March 11, and become a 24-hour operation from the summer.
The Arabic channel will cost £25m-a-year and is the first in a series of new World Service TV channels, including BBC Persian - broadcasting in Farsi.
The corporation is going head-to-head with existing channels like al Jazeera and al Arabiya.
