Hawke to build bridges with Muslims
FORMER Labor Prime Minister Bob Hawke is tackling a new challenge - trying to find common ground between the Muslim and non-Muslim worlds.
On the 25th anniversary of his 1983 election win, the 78-year-old Mr Hawke said he was hoping "in a small way" to play a part in avoiding a clash of civilisations.
"We need to do everything we can to bring together the thoughtful, constructive forces of the Muslim and non-Muslim world," he said yesterday.
"That challenge which exists at the moment between the Muslim and non-Muslim world has potential to be disastrous as reflected in the extremism of both sides."
Mr Hawke has spent most of his adult life bringing warring parties together as an industrial advocate, trade union leader and politician.
