Army successfully tests nuclear-capable missile

Rawalpindi, 1 Feb. (AKI) - Pakistan successfully test-fired the nuclear-capable Ghauri (Hatf-V) Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile (IRBM), the military said in a statement quoted by the Associated Press of Pakistan news agency.

The missile can hit a target up to 1,300 kilometres away.

"The field launch exercise of the Army' Strategic Force Command (ASFC) was witnessed by President Pervez Musharraf, chief of the Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, senior military officers and scientists," the statement said.

Musharraf congratulated the army on achieving what he said was a high standard of training and excellent results.

Pakistan formally kicked off its medium-range missile programme in April 1998, with the first successful test flight of the Ghauri I missile, followed by similar tests involving the nuclear-capable Ghauri, Shaheen, Ghaznavi and Abdali missile systems.
