Terror watch over Muslim prisoners
by Paula Doneman
QUEENSLAND prisons are potential recruiting grounds for terrorists, police say.
Life behind bars for some Muslim prisoners and those who have converted to Islam after their incarceration has been monitored by authorities for the past four years.
Detective Acting Chief Superintendent John Sheppard said there had not been any threat or any evidence of terrorist groups actively recruiting prisoners.
However he said some prisoners who converted to fundamentalist strains of Islam, such as Wahabi and Salafist, had been investigated.
"There are probably less than half a dozen in the last three years we have looked at and that was largely because they had a quiet intensity about them and made statements sympathetic to terrorist groups or acts," said Chief Supt Sheppard, head of the Queensland police security intelligence branch.
Most of those prisoners, whom police will not identify, have since been released into the community.
"Their positions, associations and activities were looked at . . . and we are satisfied at this point in time that they did not and don't constitute a threat to the Queensland community," he told The Sunday Mail.
