US dialogue with Iran impossible, says Jewish leader
Rome, 30 Jan. (AKI) - Relations between the US and Iran were at a low point and dialogue was no longer possible, according to a key Jewish leader.
The executive director of the American Jewish Committee, David Harris, said he found it difficult to accept that the US could negotiate with Iran until it halted its nuclear enrichment programme.
"The situation has changed and dialogue is no longer possible," Harris told Adnkronos International (AKI) in an exclusive interview in Rome.
Harris was visiting Italy for talks with prime minister Romano Prodi and foreign affairs minister Massimo D'Alema.
Harris is considered one of the most influential international lobbyists. He is the author of several books on Jewish issues and a regular contributor to prominent newspapers and radio stations.
He said due to Italy's extensive economic and commercial relations with Iran, it could play an important role in brokering negotiations.
Iran's nuclear ambitions have provoked widespread international debate despite a US intelligence report in December 2007 that concluded Iran was not planning to use nuclear enrichment for military purposes.
Regarding Italy, Harris said the Italian government's stance in the Middle East was "positive and balanced."
Harris had just returned from talks at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where topics such as Iran's nuclear programme, the Lebanese crisis, the role of Syria, the situation in Gaza and the Middle East peace process were discussed.
