DAR AL HARB/ISLAM - U.K./IRAN: BRITISH FRONTS SUPPLYING IRAN'S NUKE PROGRAM

MI6 identifies dual-use British fronts supplying Iran's nuke program

LONDON — British intelligence has uncovered a network directed to procure uranium for Iran's nuclear weapons program.

Officials said Britain's MI6 has identified a network of Iranian fronts ordered to supply dual-use material for Teheran's nuclear program. One British company, directed to procure weapons-grade uranium for Iran, has already been shut down.

"The really worrying aspect is that if one company is involved, are there others out there?" asked Roger Berry, chairman of parliament's Quadripartite Committee, which monitors arms exports.

"We continue to investigate allegations related to the supply of components for nuclear programs including related activities of British nationals," a spokesman for the British Customs and Excise said.

Officials said the British company acquired the Russian uranium sometime in 2005. The first destination was to have been Sudan, but British authorities foiled the plot in early 2006.

"With the collapse of the Soviet Union there was always the question over not just uranium but where other WMD components were going and how this could be controlled," Berry said.
