DAR AL ISLAM - PAKISTAN: "KHUDA KE LIYAY"

SHC asks petitioner to provide Jihad quotes

KARACHI: A division bench of the Sindh High Court (SHC) asked a petitioner Saifullah Rabbani Tuesday to cite relevant quotes from the Quran and Hadith to establish his point of view regarding Jihad (war in the name of Allah). The bench, comprising SHC Chief Justice Sabihuddin Ahmed and Justice Muhammad Afzal Soomro, was hearing a constitutional petition against the release and screening of the Pakistani film “Khuda Ke Liyay” (in the name of God), which, according to the petitioner, carried remarks against Jihad and projected Muslims as extremists. In his petition, the appellant had stated that the film propagated European culture and ridiculed Islamic values and basic tenets such as Jihad. He said it had derogatory remarks against Islam and Muslims. The petitioner also cited a decree (fatwa) that clerics had issued against the film. The bench, after hearing the counsel for the petitioner, directed him to give citations from the Holy Book and the Sunnah to establish his point of view and put it off till August 10. Geo TV, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA), producer of the film Shoaib Mansoor and actress Iman Ali are cited as respondents in the petition.
