Senior Officer Suspected in Afghan Bribery Case
A commanding officer is suspected of lying to the police during investigations into a recent case involving bribery among Finnish peacekeepers in Afghanistan.
A spokesperson from the Finnish defence Headquarters told YLE TV News that the man is suspected of giving unsubstantiated statements concerning official procedures and service misdemeanours.
The Finnish officer is suspected of knowing about bribes accepted by peacekeepers serving in Afghanistan a few years ago. The investigation is in its final stages and a decision regarding charges is expected soon.
News of suspicions relating to a commanding officer was first reported by the Finnish news Agency.
Last month, two Finnish peacekeepers received jail sentences by the Helsinki District Court for accepting bribes during their service in Afghanistan. The men took bribes from a local businessman, to whom the peacekeepers granted construction projects.
At the time of the trial, Finnish defence headquarters also suspected three other soldiers serving as peacekeepers of complacency, as they were aware of, but did not report bribes their fellow servicemen were taking.
