Religious students occupy Red Mosque in Pakistan
Hundreds of religious students occupied the famous Red Mosque in Islamabad today to try to prevent the authorities from re-opening it under the leadership of a government-appointed cleric.
More than 100 people were killed when the Pakistani army attacked the mosque two weeks to end an occupation by hardliners who wanted to impose Islamic law in the city.
Students occupied the building today to demand the return of its former chief cleric, Abdul Aziz, who is currently in government custody.
The Pakistani police fired tear gas to disperse the crowd, who had forced the retreat of the government-appointed cleric assigned to lead Friday prayers.
