DAR AL HARB/ISLAM - U.K./IRAN: AL QUEDA OF IRAQ TIED TO FAILED AL QUEDA ATTACKS IN GLASGOW & LONDON

Iraq's Al Qaida network mentored cells behind British strikes

The Al Qaida network in Iraq has been linked to British strikes in Glasgow and London in July. MI5 and MI6 have been investigating the extent of the direction provided to the Muslim insurgency networks by Al Qaida in Iraq.

The assessment was that the Al Qaida network in Iraq provided the indoctrination and training for British Muslims to assemble explosives for attacks throughout Britain. The Iraqi network was said to have given direction to the Indian and Middle East Muslims on targeting and avoiding British authorities.

British intelligence said the Al Qaida network in Iraq has become the leading organizer of attacks in the Middle East and Europe since the death of network chief Abu Mussab Al Zarqawi. MI6 has concluded that Al Qaida in Iraq has become better organized and achieved greater outreach under new Egyptian network chief, Abu Ayoub Al Masri.

The assessment was that Al Masri has increased Al Qaida support to cells in North Africa and Western Europe. This explains the rash of attacks in such countries as Algeria, Morocco as well as Britain.

"We are aware that AQI [Al Qaida in Iraq] networks are active in the UK," a report prepared by Britain's Joint Intelligence Analysis Centre said.

Why is Britain an important target of Al Qaida?

British intelligence believes that the withdrawal of British troops from Iraq would deal a death blow to the U.S. military presence in that country.
