New video of Bin Laden
By TOM HARVEY
NEW footage of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden has emerged in which he praises martyrdom as a path to glory for Muslims.
However, it appears the 40-minute video only contains previously unseen footage from old broadcasts.
Videos of bin Laden have become comparatively rare, leading to rumours that the terror leader is dead or seriously ill.
His second-in-command, Ayman al Zawahiri, releases video and audio speeches more regularly, including two last week.
The US Senate on Friday voted to double the reward on him to $50 million (£24.5 million).
In the second he threatened new attacks against the UK in retaliation for the knighthood awarded to Satanic Verses writer Salman Rushdie.
US network CNN, which saw an early copy of the newly-released video, said it contained old clips but had been compiled in the last four weeks.
The environment in which bin Laden is shown speaking is similar to that on releases made before the 9/11 suicide attacks.
He appears in only a 50-second portion of the video in which he asserts the Prophet Mohammed had wanted to be a martyr.
Ayman al ZawahiriIn the tape he said: "What is this status that the best of mankind wished for himself? He wished to be a martyr.
"He himself said: 'By Him in whose hands my life is! I would love to attack and be martyred'.
"This glorious prophet who was inspired by God summarised this entire life by these words. He wished upon himself this status. "Happy is one who was chosen by God as a martyr."
