Expert: Britain Is Jihad Central

"Britain is at War with the Jihadists, that's the bottom line" says Dr. Walid Phares.

British officials "need to cope with the reality that they are the target of a Jihad war," Dr. Phares told Jack Riccardi on San Antonio's KTSA Saturday.

Dr. Phares, director of the Future Terrorism Project at the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, a visiting fellow at the European Foundation for Democracy and several books on the Islamic jihad against the West including the most recent "Future Jihad," said that Britain "is one of the most intense battlefields for the jihadists, al Qaeda or not, in the whole European continent. Almost every July there has been either an attack or a foiled plot."

The terrorists, he said, strike different targets, with different cells, "trying different things each time."

Speaking on Fox's "Geraldo at Large" Saturday night, he described the attacks in London and Scotland as being "not just about anger ... Not just about [former Prime Minister Tony Blair]" but "about the British government, so they [the Jihadists] are going to test it [the British government] and see far they will go in the reaction."

In the quest for "reasons" for the terrorist assaults on Britain in the past two days, Dr. Phares told the San Francisco Chronicle's Ross Report that "As expected, the debate is loaded with the classical argument of "anger mounting among Muslims in Britain."

Since the 7/7 attacks, a so-called socio-economic doctrine was injected in the discussion ... That the perpetrators are allegedly "reacting to the marginalization of the Muslim community on economic grounds."

Instead, said Phares, the growth of Jihadism is not the result of socio-economic disparities, but of the expansion of Wahabism, Salafism and other forms of radical ideologies. British understanding of the whole picture cannot complete itself unless a clear cut absorption of the fact that what the U.K. (and many other democracies) are facing now and in the future is a "War," not dispersed acts of violence.
