DAR AL HARB - U.K.: FLAMING DHIMMITUDE OF THE UNITED KINGDOM

Muslim given Shadow Cabinet role
By Simon McGee Political Editor

A WORKING mother from Yorkshire has made history by becoming the first Muslim to be appointed to the Shadow Cabinet of any political party.

Dewsbury-born Sayeeda Warsi – who is not an MP, but will be given a life peerage to enable her to sit in Parliament – was last night plucked from near-obscurity to become Shadow Communities Cohesion Minister in a string of top team changes announced by David Cameron.

The appointment of the lawyer and party adviser on diversity issues comes just days after the man who beat her in the 2005 General Election to become the MP for Dewsbury, Labour's Shahid Malik, became Britain's first Muslim Minister.

Last night she told the Yorkshire Post: "It's totally overwhelming and truly humbling. At the end of the day, I'm a working class girl from Dewsbury. It just shows what this country is about when you can start off as the daughter of an immigrant mill worker and rise to these dizzy heights.

"It sends out a very strong message about David Cameron and today's Tory party, and underlines the fact you can be proudly British, proudly Muslim and proud of your ethnic background."
