DAR AL HARB - SWEDEN: OUSAMA KASSIR, TERROR SUSPECT, ASKS FOR ASYLUM OF THE CZECH REPUBLIC...HE IS AFRAID TO RETURN TO SWEDEN

Swede suspected of terrorism asks for Czech political asylum

Stockholm/Prague- Swede of Lebanese origin Ousama Kassir who has been detained in the Czech Republic since last December on suspicion of supporting terrorism has asked for political asylum in the Czech Republic, the Swedish daily Expressen writes.

According to the paper, Kassir is disappointed at the Swedish authorities' approach to his detention in the Czech Republic and the threat that he would be extradited to the USA.

However, the information on Kassir's asylum application has not been confirmed in the Czech Republic today.

Neither the leadership of Prague's Pankrac prison where Kassir is in detention, nor the Czech State Attorney's office nor the Swedish Embassy in Prague knew about such an application.

"We will visit Mr Kassir next week and ask him about it. At present, I know nothing," a Swedish Embassy employee told CTK today.

The Interior Ministry that deals with political asylum applications told CTK it never published specific information on asylum seekers.
