French authorities close Muslim youth camps
METZ, France -- Authorities in eastern France have closed down two youth summer camps run by Turkish cultural associations for failing to fulfill official norms, government inspectors said Monday.
A center at Courcelles-Chaussy was shut and 87 youths sent home Sunday night because of the "absence of educational or pedagogical project" and the lack of qualified staff.
The center was run by a cultural association based at a mosque in Strasbourg.
Last week authorities shut a holiday camp at Bains-les-Bains, after complaints that staff were enforcing a rigid religious discipline.
One child complained to police that he was forced to wake at night in order to pray.
