MORE than 400 people attended a rally in Bankstown criticising anti-terrorism laws as an abuse used for political means and leaving the Muslim community isolated.

At the rally yesterday, organised by the Islamic political movement Hizb Ut-Tahrir Australia, speakers called for justice for Dr Mohamed Haneef, who flew home to India yesterday after 23 days' detention in Queensland.

A message by the former prime minister Malcolm Fraser had been withdrawn at his request, said the rally organiser, Wassim Dourehi.

Mamdouh Habib, who is suing the Federal Government over his detention in Egypt and at Guantanamo Bay, condemned the abuse of the judicial system by police under the guise of anti-terrorism. Mr Habib said the treatment of Dr Haneef had further isolated Muslims, who now feared that even to attend such a rally could lead to a knock on their door by ASIO.

"This is what these national security laws have done. There are 50,000 Muslims living in the Bankstown community ,and look how many people are here … People are frightened."
