Gold Coast doctor related to terror suspects
THE Gold Coast registrar arrested over the foiled bomb attacks in Britain is related to two of his fellow suspects being held in the UK.
British newspapers reported that Dr Mohammed Haneef is the cousin of brothers Sabeel and Kafeel (also know as Khalid) Ahmed, two doctors arrested in England over the failed car bombings in London and Glasgow.
The trio are part of a group of eight people, all with links to Britain's state-run health system, the National Health Service (NHS), arrested over last week's attacks.
The Daily Telegraph said Dr Haneef, who was arrested in Brisbane on Monday, and the two Ahmed brothers were all born and raised in Bangalore, India and graduated with medical degrees from the Rajiv Gandhi University.
Dr Haneef, 27, and Dr Sabeel Ahmed, 26, were also employed as doctors at Halton Hospital in the north-western English town of Runcorn, Cheshire, and are believed to have shared a flat.
Dr Kafeel Ahmed, 27, suffered life threatening burns after he allegedly drove a Jeep Cherokee packed with petrol and gas canisters into a terminal building at Glasgow Airport.
The Times newspaper said relatives of Dr Haneef had confirmed he was related to the Ahmed family and all three had studied together.
"The family said that they were not close, but other relatives revealed that Dr Haneef left the SIM card of his British mobile phone with Dr (Sabeel) Ahmed when he left Britain last year to take a job at the Gold Coast Hospital in Queensland, Australia,'' the newspaper said.
As well as the failed Glasgow attack, Dr Kafeel Ahmed is alleged to have been involved in the failed attempt to set off two car bombs in central London last Thursday night.
