Union of Muslim Scholars to be set up in Iraq

BAGHDAD, June 4 (KUNA) -- Muslim scholars will hold a conference in the Iraqi capital Baghdad later on Monday to establish a Sunni-Shiite authority.

The conference, due to group 130 senior Muslim scholars, will hold without any political interference or participation, said Sheikh Ahmed Abdel Ghafur al-Samarra'i, the head of the Sunni Waqf in Iraq, in a press statement.

Al-Samarra'i, who is a member of a preparatory committee, said the conference aimed to activate the Makka agreement to strengthen the brotherly ties among Iraqi people, and to hold on the nation solidarity especially among the Sunnis and Shiites, to be capable of handling extremism and sectarian issues.
