Iran, IAEA reach good framework: Larijani
Iran's top nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani said here Friday night that Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency have reached a good framework for settling remaining issues on Iran's peaceful nuclear case.
Iran's secretary of Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) was speaking to reporters after his two-hour talks with IAEA Director-General Mohamed ElBaradei held in Vienna, Austria, on Friday on the country's peaceful nuclear program.
"Although we reached a good framework for resolving the remaining issues, all these (efforts) should yield result within a political context with the EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana," Larijani said.
He added, "If we reach an understanding on the case, the next phase could be started." "ElBaradei raised a very subtle point which must receive more attention.
"We should not live in the past rather we must adapt ourselves to the realities. The reality is that Iran has achieved the enrichment capacity," the SNSC secretary stated.
"Extremism and violence towards a country whose scientists have obtained the enrichment capacity is not rational, particularly towards a country which has declared it is not seeking the (nuclear) weapon and accepts IAEA inspections as the official source." Larijani said his regular meetings with ElBaradei was a proof to Iran's dynamic move in cooperating with the agency.
"It would be logical for the big countries to stop obstinacy vis-v-vis a country which is ready to cooperate with the IAEA. It is not difficult to find a rational and effective model for coordination over the case," he added.
On speculations that his talks with Solana were fruitless and also on West's simultaneous effort to mount pressure on Iran, he said, "Talks are basically held to settle and modify such contradictory attitudes.
"In our previous talks, various ideas were raised. I hope they would be fruitful during future negotiations." The top nuclear negotiator further stated, "We have held consultations with ElBaradei on these ideas. Undoubtedly the world of politics and diplomacy has not just one way.
"But those who have dominance over just one way would rather diplomacy reach an impasse while they should think logically and have a positive approach towards realities." Larijani expressed hope "this course would bear good outcomes in future talks" and said, "This is what we want."
