Coptic-Muslim fighting in Egypt
Cairo, Jun. 18, 2007 (CWNews.com) - Coptic Christians clashed with Muslims in the Egyptian village of Seft Meydoum, south of Cairo, last Thursday, June 14.
At least four people required hospital care after the violence in Seft Meydoum. The fighting reportedly began with a bicycle accident involving a Muslim girl and a Coptic man. After the girl was struck by the Christian cyclist, her family went to his home to stone him and his family.
Copts in the neighborhood came to his defense, sparking wider fighting.
On the same day, 13 people were arrested in Alexandria after a confrontation between Copts and Muslims outside the Church of the Holy Infant. That incident began with an argument between a Coptic youth and the son of a local Muslim leader.
Copts comprise 6% of Egypt's population of 76 million, according to official government figures.
Coptic Orthodox officials set the figure at more than twice that high. Copts have frequently complained about harassment by Muslim militants and slow police response to their pleas for help.
