AFGHANISTAN: TALIBAN STEPS UP ATTACKS IN THE SOUTH

Karachi, 19 June (AKI) - (by Syed Saleem Shahzad) - The Taliban's mass uprising in south western Afghanistan began with reports on Tuesday saying that Taliban militants had taken control of Myanishen district in Kandahar province after days of fierce fighting with NATO and Afghan forces. Fighting has also been reported in other provinces such as Uruzgan and Helmand. A Taliban spokesperon, Qari Mohammed Yousuf told Adnkronos International (AKI) that at least 16 British soldiers have been killed in the fighting and three tanks were destroyed in the district of Grishk in Helmand, although there has been no independent confirmation of the claim.

"NATO has only one way to deal with the situation and that is aerial bombardment," said Yousuf in a phone interview with AKI. "They just cannot send their men to fight with us on the land," he said.

The Taliban said that they are now poised to march into other districts in Afghanistan and aiming to make their biggest push of this year against NATO forces.

According to independent sources, the Taliban has stepped up its insurgent activities from carrying out several suicide attacks in the capital Kabul, as well as in Paktika and Kunar provinces as well as other partys of the country.

On top of that there has been intense fighting against NATO troops in the Chora district of Uruzgan province, in Myanishen district in Kandahar province as well as the district of Grishk in Helmand province.
