DAR AL HARB - SPAIN: ARABIC ON TV FOR THE GROWING 'MOSLEM MINORITY'

FIRST ARABIC-SUBTITLED TV PROGRAMMES AIRED

Barcelona, 11 June (AKI) - Spain's local state TV-3 channel in the northeastern Catalonia region on Monday began airing one of its most viewed TV dramas, 'El cor de la ciutat (the heart of the city)', which chronicles daily life in the Sant Andreu district of Barcelona with Arabic as well as Catalan subtitles. It is the first time that a Spanish TV station has transmitted programmes subtitled in Arabic.


The popular 'Karakia' cookery programme will also be broadcast with Arabic and Catalan subtitles in what is a pilot project aimed at rolling out the channel to the 200,000 North African immigrants registered as resident in the region, daily El Periodico reports. Moroccans are the most numerous nationality among the 800,000 immigrants resident in Catalonia, of whom 300,000 are Latin Americans.
