DAR AL HARB - AUSTRALIA: ISLAMIC JIHAD BOOKS BANNED

Court upholds ban on Islamist books

Civil libertarians have lost a bid to overturn a ban on the sale of two books in Australia, including one that had a preface written by Osama bin Laden.

The Classification Review Board (CRB) banned the books on the basis that they promoted, incited or instructed in matters of crime or violence.

It found the book, Join the Caravan, was written by a prominent Islamic terrorist who was a mentor to Osama bin Laden and aimed to encourage Muslims to take up arms.

It found another publication, Defence of the Muslim Lands, supported suicide bombing.
The preface was written by Osama bin Laden.

The New South Wales Council for Civil Liberties went to the Federal Court in Sydney to challenge the decision to ban the books, arguing it involved an error of law.

The council said the board had failed to consider whether the effect of the books was to incite violence.

But the court rejected the argument and dismissed the case.
