DAR AL HARB - THE WEST: INTERPOL INTENDS ON SPEEDING UP ACCESS TO ITS DATABASES BECAUSE OF THE TERROR FIGHT

Interpol to speed up fight on global terrorism

VARNA, Bulgaria (Reuters) - Interpol plans to speed up access to its databases worldwide to boost the fight against global crime and terrorism, the head of the international police force said on Tuesday.

Secretary General Ronald Noble said Interpol was developing a new computer system so investigative units worldwide could directly query its databases on suspected money laundering and terrorism financing.

"Once the system is in place, we will not need to type in information manually, increasing speed and efficiency while reducing errors," he told an Interpol conference in the Bulgarian seaside resort of Varna.

"This will revolutionise the exchange of police information. It will bring every investigator in the world within a click of a mouse to a wealth of police information."

The system will allow officers investigating funding of terrorism to compare companies, telephones and addresses against database records submitted by Interpol's 186 member countries.

Interpol does not have investigative powers, but can provide tools and databases to investigators, although a database of this scale could raise data protection concerns.
