Michigan seeks joint ventures with Qatar
The American state of Michigan, home to the largest Arab population outside the Middle East, yesterday invited Qatar Inc to invest there and sought joint ventures with them in the energy-rich peninsula.
With the US presidential elections round the corner, the American Arab Chambers of Commerce (AACC) also hopes that a change of guard at the White House may see change in policies to attract more businesses from the Middle East into the US.
“We are looking at sectors like construction, services, IT, healthcare, education and transportation. There are lots of opportunities,” said American Arab Chambers Chairman Nasser Beydoun, who is leading a 32-member delegation from Michigan to Qatar.
The delegation comprised representatives of banks, insurance, pension funds, construction companies, IT and many other sectors.
AACC has a long-term relationship with Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry and had signed an agreement with the QCCI four years ago.
QCCI Executive Committee member Mohamed bin Ahmed Towar al-Kuwari said Qatar’s attractive investment climate had prompted many multinational companies to enter the country in a big way.
“The trade delegation’s one of the objectives is to build relationships that are mutually beneficial,” he said, adding the members looked for joint ventures and investments back to Michigan.
The mission would like to see alliances between Qatar and Michigan healthcare sectors, he said.
