Leftwing Greens: Cheese Is Nationalistic

The leftwing Greens (GroenLinks) in the municipality of Heerenveen are annoyed that the naturalisation of immigrants is celebrated with traditional Dutch snacks. The party feels exotic snacks should be served.

On the naturalisation day on November 21, immigrants were given their passports. The occasion was celebrated with typical Dutch snacks like yellow cheese cubes, liver sausage and herring. Bernie van Ruijven, the leader of the GroenLinks in Heerenveen, feels this was disrespectful towards other cultures.

According to a municipality spokesperson, Dutch snacks were chosen on purpose. The dietary requirements of vegetarians and Muslims who do not eat pork had already been taken into account. "A socially acceptable selection" was served.

Nevertheless, Van Ruijven feels that explicit 'halal' snacks should be served. It appears she may be getting her way because the municipality stated that "the international dimension will be kept in mind for the next ceremony".


The story is from 2006, but still a good one to demonstrate how dhimmified the Netherlands have become...
