DAR AL ISLAM - IRAN: DEMONSTRATION OF MILITARY MIGHT BY IRAN, GUARDED BY "HEAD TO TOE BAGS" WITH WALKIE TALKIES

Iran shows the world its military might

Iran staged a show of military might today watched by president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Crack units of the Iranian army marched past a copy of the Koran, and the country’s latest tanks and missiles were paraded at the mausoleum of the founder of the Islamic republic, the late Ayatollah Ruholla Khomeini, in Tehran.

Army commanders, ambassadors of foreign countries in Iran and government officials watched the display of military readiness to mark Army Day.

Female security guards, in full Muslim dress, patrolled with walkie-talkies at the ready.
Mr Ahmadinejad used the event to claim that UN sanctions against Iran over its nuclear programme had no effect on his armed forces.

Mr Ahmadinejad said that his military was self-sufficient. “Some bullying powers imagined that by implementing sanctions they would weaken our army but today our army is self-sufficient and secures its needs,” he said.
