DAR AL HARB/ISLAM - IRAN/THE WEST: THE E.U. & RUSSIA ARE TO DISCUSS IRAN & THE TROUBLES WITH THE NEO-SOVIETS

EU to debate Iran nuclear ambitions, troubled ties with Russia on Monday

LUXEMBOURG: EU foreign ministers on Monday are to discuss efforts to curb Iran's nuclear ambitions and meet with their Russian counterpart to review relations with Moscow that are increasingly troubled by trade, energy and political disputes.

The European Union ministers will hold talks two days before top negotiators from Iran and the UN Security Council, plus Germany, meet for the first time since February.

The EU's foreign policy chief, Javier Solana, is also to meet with top Iranian negotiator Ali Larijani on Wednesday, although no venue or details for that meeting have been made public. Solana negotiates on behalf of permanent U.N. Security Council members France, Britain, Russia, the United States and China, as well as Germany.

The international community wants Tehran to freeze nuclear enrichment work before any talks can be held on a package of economic and other incentives for Iran, including assistance for its nuclear power generation program.

Iran has started feeding small amounts of uranium gas into centrifuges that can enrich it to weapons-grade level and is already running more than 1,300 of the machines, according to an International Atomic Energy Agency document obtained last week by The Associated Press.
