Mosque brawl: man is arrested

DETECTIVES investigating a mass brawl at a Burton mosque which spilled out into the street have made an arrest as they hunt for those responsible.
A 39-year-old man was arrested yesterday as house-to-house enquiries were carried out in the area of the Central Mosque in Uxbridge Street. Further arrests are expected.
Last night, officers visited the Uxbridge Street area, handing out leaflets and knocking on doors to ask residents and worshippers if they had witnessed the violence or had any information which would be useful to police investigating the incident.
The investigation follows violent scenes outside the mosque on Monday evening, when a brawl erupted involving rival factions involved in a long-running power struggle.
Police threw a cordon across the street after the second outbreak of violence at the mosque in less than three years.
The Mail understands that a group of dissenters against the mosque's current committee number only a handful of those who worship at the Central Mosque — with the vast majority in full support of Imam Mohammed Farooq Nazami.
Sources at the mosque said that the dissenting group brought in 'outside agitators' from Leeds, who started the violence.
Superintendent David Forrest, deputy commander of the Burton-based Trent Valley division, said: "The community should be reassured that we take this matter extremely seriously and are carrying out a thorough investigation.
"I also want to make it clear that we do not expect a repeat of this incident, which involved an internal dispute within the mosque.
"When disputes spill out on to the streets, creating public disorder, people considering such action need to understand that police will deal robustly with such criminal behaviour."
Meanwhile, leaders of Burton’s Princess Street mosque have distanced themselves from the ugly scenes witnessed in Uxbridge Street — also refuting a claim made by a Mail source that their imam, Mohammad Hafeez Ghazali, was 'causing carnage'.
Mosque chairman Allah Dad said: "We wish to point out that the Princess Street mosque, its imam or its worshippers are in any way to blame or be associated with the unfortunate event that occurred at the Uxbridge Street mosque.
"We have always discouraged and distanced ourselves from this kind of behaviour in the past and will also continue to do so in the future.
"We also have kept at a fair distance from the few who try to become the root of these problems. It is these who create a bad name for the Muslim community in Burton and it is these who spoil the name of Islam as well."
