Muslim countries call on Philippines to end unrest
Muslim countries are appealing to the Philippine government and local Islamic rebels to end a three-day battle that has killed 18 people and displaced thousands.
The Organisation of the Islamic Conference has called on the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) and Manila to abide by a 1996 agreement that was meant to end conflict in the southern Philippines.
Shirley Escalante reports the commander of the separatist group has declared a Jihad or holy war against the government.
Ustadz Habier Malik, an MNLF commander, says government attacks on three rebel camps in Sulu province since last week, which caused a number of casualties, prodded him to declare a holy war against the government.
For its part, the military claims to have been attacked by MNLF forces, killing two soldiers and wounding eight others.
Officials from both sides have expressed concern over this development, after a peace agreement has been signed between the government and the MNLF in 1996.
