House Prices In Muslim Districts Lower Since Van Gogh Murder
THE HAGUE, 07/02/07 - House prices in 12 Amsterdam districts with many Islamic residents have declined compared with the rest of Amsterdam since the terrorist murder of Theo van Gogh. Before the murder, prices there had actually risen faster than elsewhere in the capital.
Theo van Gogh was murdered on 2 November 2004 by terrorist Mohammed Bouyeri, who is of Moroccan origin. Three economists at Amsterdam's Free University studied the development of housing prices in districts with a large number of Moroccan and Turkish residents (Transvaalbuurt, Indische Buurt West, Indische Buurt Oost, Landlust, Erasmuspark, Kolenkit, Van Galenbuurt, Slotermeer-Noordoost, Slotermeer-Zuidwest, Geuzenveld, Osdorp-Midden and Overtoomse Veld).
House prices in these 12 districts were gradually catching up with those in the rest of Amsterdam in the 10 months before the murder. But after the murder, this trend was reversed. On average, houses became 3 percent cheaper. The concentration of immigrants in the districts increased further and white residents moved out.
