Syria Blames US for Lack of Middle East Peace
Jerusalem (CNSNews.com) - Syrian President Bashar Assad has told a Saudi newspaper that the "main obstacle" to peace in the Middle East is the Bush administration's "rejection" of the peace process. "There's an American administration without a vision, and the U.S. administration, unfortunately, is central to all peace processes in the region," Assad was quoted as saying. Assad said that international envoys shuttling between Israel and Syria have quoted Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert as saying that the decision for relations between the two countries rests in Washington. Israel has rejected recent peace overtures from Damascus, saying that as long as Syria hosts the headquarters of Palestinian terror groups, including Hamas, in Damascus and supports Hizballah in south Lebanon, Syria is not serious about peace. Washington has accused both Syria and Iran along with Hizballah of trying to topple the pro-democracy Lebanese government.
