DAR AL ISLAM - EGYPT: SHARI'AH IS & WILL CONTINUE TO BE THE BASIS OF EGYPTIAN LAW

Sharia to remain basis of Egyptian law: G. Mubarak

CAIRO - Constitutional reform being carried out in Egypt will not undermine the position of sharia, or Islamic law, as the principal source of legislation, Gamal Mubarak, son of the Egyptian president, said in remarks reported on Friday.

“There is no intention to bypass article 2” which focuses on Islamic law, said Mubarak, quoted in the government daily Al Ahram and stressing that “this article will remain” in the country’s constitution.

Gamal Mubarak, who heads the National Democratic Party’s policies committee, said: “The aim of some allegations about an amendment to article 2 of the constitution... is to sow confusion about the planned constitution amendments.”

President Hosni Mubarak recently put forward a series of proposals to amend the constitution, which led some Egyptian intellectuals to ask for article 2 to be changed to make sharia “one of the sources of the law” and not the “principal” source.

The request angered the opposition Muslim Brotherhood whose members control one fifth of parliament’s 454 seats.

The last line about the 'Moslem Brotherhood' is key here, obviously the Mubarak government knows quite well who really is in charge...

When the 'Moslem Brotherhood' says to jump, Mubarak and the remaining 4/5th of the government asks "how high"?

What have our jizya payments of $2 Billion plus yearly gotten for us?!?

Any goodwill???

Any progress towards "westernization"?!?
