DAR AL HARB - U.S.A.: THE CONFLICT BETWEEN JEWS & MOSLEMS

Battle between Muslims and Jews

In the midst of the constant battle between the Israelis and Palestinians, the one commonality they share is the respect of Abraham as a role model. The Jewish tradition refers to him as 'our father' and Muslims consider him to be the prophet of Islam.

"We are imprisoned by our tradition and our tradition is rivalry," said Judea Pearl, President of the Daniel Pearl Foundation and UCLA computer science professor.

This is one of the many pressing issues that Pearl discussed with over 30 students and faculty last Wednesday at Kent Law School.

Part of his goal in lecturing at universities is to raise awareness of the conflicts between Palestinians and Israelis by discussing Muslim and Jewish dialogue.

"It's another war because it is not being discussed, that is why I am doing this as an individual project to get across Muslim-Jewish dialogue," said Pearl.

The Daniel Pearl Foundation was started by Pearl's family and friends after his son, Daniel Pearl, was kidnapped and murdered by terrorists in Pakistan in 2002. Daniel was a well-known Wall Street Journal reporter, famous for breaking the story of Al Qaeda laundering money through the Tanzanite Gem market.

The main focus of the foundation is to raise awareness that hatred was the root cause of Daniel's death.

Pearl began his lecture by introducing the latest published book titled, "I am Jewish," consisting of personal reflections inspired by the last words of Daniel Pearl. Pearl also emphasized the teaching of history with the two religions.

"Theology is not enough. History must be a part of curriculum within the school systems, and it is the principle of devotion that matters," said Pearl.

The modern day believers need to be the teachers of religion, societal issues, etc.

The clash between Jews and Muslims is historical and ongoing because Palestine feels that they are a separate country, explained Pearl.

Originally, the Jews were born in the Middle East; therefore, they do not want to convert into Islam and vice-versa for Muslims.
